I know what happens to excess weapons when you're attacked if you have a few...
But if I buy 1m def weapons and don't train a single defensive unit, will they still take damage when I'm attacked?
I understand very few of you will have any experience in this so I'm basically awaiting the answer of an admin.

yes. anytime you are attacked unless you do a severe ammount of damage to the opponent you will lose damage to your weaps.

But also know that if I have say...
10 attack troops
10 instant material acquisitions
10 spider attack force (replicators, weak weapons)

When I attack the Spider Attack Forces take no damage as they weren't used.
So how come def. weapons take damage when there are NO troops to man them?

Because they're still sitting there on the battlefield, just not being used.

And yes, unarmed troops do die, more-so than armed troops. But at anything below 24, they won't die.

maybe a stupid example from Real Life

If you put an heavy armour in Iraq WITHOUT any personell in it... you mayb be certain it is going to be blewn up by the resistence..
if you go attacking someone with 4 knives in your pocket but only use one... the 3 in the pocket don't get damaged...

I know, I know...
When there are SOME troops, the weapons take damage... but when there are none... I'll test this theory after my ascension.
