The RULEZ for an official Debate!
Posted: Tue Dec 04, 2007 4:45 pm
HI! AND WELCOME ALL!
This is the new and straight to you debating area of the forums! Here you can debate issues in the league we are going to set up, have practice debates. Get ranked by the three judges (introduced later in this post.) and finally have one on one debates.
ANYONE, save the judges themselves can be challenged to a one VS one debate, but they cannot be forced into it.
So generally everyone around here knows who I am, and yes, I am generally not the nicest person, but that does not apply here. I realise I am here to do a job and set an example within the confines of the debating section.
As a precursor. Every debate in this section is to follow these rules. If they dont, the topics will be locked and deleted without warning other then this one. If you want to 'argue' then you have the spam and 'this and that' sections. (thanks!)
Firstly I shall introduce you to the world of forum debating.
Debating 101
Each competitor will be either in a team of 4, a pair or a lone.
Debating will take place in ten varied hour stages. Each stage will be announced by one of the three judges. (All time lengths will be announced below, it wont be random..lol..dont worry.)
Only the two teams/pairs/people will be allowed to post in all ten stages. Regular patrons to the debate may watch and ask questions in stage 9.
So now you think what will we debate? Each debate will be allocated a subject by the judges, all completely impartial (its a promise..) as we will pull them out of a hat! lol. Literally I have a hat with me! Then the same method will be used to decide which team will be for the motion or against it. Which will decide who goes first, those who are pro the motion will always go first.
So here they are the stages.
Stage 1* (12 hours): Pro team will make their introduction. They can introduce what it is they debate for, set out some preliminary pointers, but there should be no major points presented here.
Stage 2* (12 hours) : Anti team will get a chance to make their introduction.
Stage 3 (24 hours): Pro team will put forward their argument supporting the motion.
Stage 4 (24 hours): Anti Team can Counter A.
Stage 5 (12 hours): Pro Team May Re-Counter. Pro Team MUST conclude their argument.
Stage 6 (24 hours): Anti Team may put forward their arguments.
Stage 7 (24 hours): Pro Team may counter.
Stage 8 (12 hours): Anti Team may re-counter. Anti Team MUST conclude their argument.
Stage 9 (12 hours): Watchers may propose questions and further counters. May point out mis-information if they have proof.
Stage 10: Judges Decide on points awarded and debate is finished.
Rules:
1. Each person may make ONE post PER stage with a maximum of 500 words. (we WILL check.)
2. There may be NO personal insults.
3. Anything regarding a topic that appears in a 'proper' game (ie NOT lego star wars or a game you made up.) a book (once again a real book not written by you, and has been published for at least a year.) or a film. (once again not made by you.) IS canon, and may be used.
4. Spam and going off topic are not allowed. Doing so will result in a forum warning.
5. You may insult the topic, but try and be clever and mischevious about it and the judges will make you pay.
6. You may not swear in any way shape and form.
7. Those area's marked with a '*', may only be posted in by ONE member of a team or pair.
8. If a challenge has not be accepted within 72 hours, the topic will be deleted.
Marking
The judges will mark you for several things.
1. (/30) Presentation/structure of argument.
2. (/20) For the intro of the argument. The information depth.
3. (/20) For arguments/main points displayed.
4. (/15) for countering ability.
5. (/15) for answering the publics/judges questions and counters.
As you can see all aspects are marked.
You will receive negative marks if you:
1. Use FALSE information and are proven to be doing so.
2. Argue using opinions not backed up by facts. (not so heavily peanolised, but will have an effect on your overall mark, so dont be too concerned unless you want to be 'the team'! so to speak..lol)
3. Insult anyone. (will not be tolerated at all.)
4. Ignore any of the judges.
5. Use this forum to settle any personal Vendetta's.
RIGHT! SO! WHO? who will be the watchers, the overlords of the debating, the judges.
Firstly myself. Secondly Osi (aka the prophet of truth.) and Finally. Tom Twin. (why some of you may ask? Well because myself and tom twin have locked debating horns many a time. He may not be to forward about it on here..but he is a good debater..as to is The Iron Duke, but he wont have anything to do with it!)
(Why me and Osi? I havnt see two better debaters on the forum save Spacey and Buck, shoot me for that later! lol..)
Right So NOW you have finally reached the end of the intro post and rules. Jeeze this took a while to write lol. I better go onto the recruiting part!!
Btw. One last note. None of the above are up for debate.
