The League.

Please sign up here if you wish to take part in the debating league. Im sure I can twist Smooshable and wolf359's arms into letting the champion(s) get an award linked to the SGW annual awards. If not I'll throw a trill naq your way or something. Prize is yet undetermined anyway.
The league can begin now or Boxing day, it will be up to you to tell us when you want to start. But all first round matches must be completed by Jan 21st (4 weeks, give or take a few days..). The deadlines for the end of rounds will get smaller per round.
We need everyone who is taking part to have said so by 23rd of December (2 full days..), then I will quickly russle up the first round matches. (Yes we will decide who you debate against, and what topic.)
Each debate will be, due to vote, a week long debate. So please adhere to the rules laid down in the relevant topic. Anyone not following them will be disqualified.
So the basic rules:
1.The winner of each debate goes to the next round.
2. (the 'U' r out rule.) If you get graded as a U you also DO NOT proceed to the next round. (so if both teams get U's, your both out).
3. In the event that the final team for the finals, has no one to debate against due to the above 'U' r out rule, then they will take on the judges, who get an automatic grade of 90% total for their team. (meaning you have to be good..and very unlucky.)
4. Teams, pairs and singles can all take part, and will debate against one another. (there is no reason why they cant.)
5. Each debate will be a week long, as according to the rules found in the link at the bottom of this post.
6. If your debate starts AFTER the deadline, you will be disqualified.
7. If your debate starts so it ends after the deadline, both teams will lose 5% of their points per day it is late. (ie. deadline is 12pm 21st jan, if your debate goes on to 12:01, its late, both teams lose 5%.)
Whats the point Semper?! I hear you ask...well. The U r out rule is a motivation. Just because you got a U dosent mean your a bad debater, could just mean you got a topic you dont like or cant work with. Dont take that personally, dont let it get ya in any way. Why the strict deadline. Debates are meant to demonstrate skill as well as intelligence and all the rest, as well as be fun. If you cant meet a deadline..well, why should the entire competition and the judges wait for you? 4 weeks is a desent amount of time, and this thing has already taken longer then I thought it would.
What topics will there be? A huge range of topics...we are cooking some up.
From who would win, the replicators or the Borg (still an iffy one I add) to things like does god exist (will definately be in there), is euthanasia right, should the death penalty still exist, can murder ever be justified? CAN war ever be justified, should abortion be legal, does God need religion, who was more powerful, Luke or Vader? Yoda or Palps?, What is better, Star Wars or Star Trek (not just canon fluff about the topics, mayube bring in r/l facts about fans etc..) Psychology, isnt it all just common sense? What is the point of Philosophy? Rugby vs American football, which is more a mans game and why? These are all just suggestions I have come up with now..but at least you have ideas what could be on the line for debate.
