Mother ship question

Hello im new to the game and im wondering how do fleets act and if i have my mother ship exploring can it still defend me if attacked

Fleets are what you use for conquering planets from other players. Once you've found a target, you click 'Conquer Planet' (it uses 15 attack turns). The fleets will destroy as many of the planet's defenses as possible (conquering the planet can take more than one attack, unless your fleet strength is big enough compared to the planet's defenses' strength). They also take part in attacking/defending while your mothership is at home.
While it's exploring, your MS can't protect you because it's... well, away, in another region of the galaxy Funny thing, though, you can still add capacity/hangers, weapons etc. to it.
