Really cool name I hope you guys know what it means fully and know more about it than the fact it was some turkish military unit...
I already sent a pm making a question about it to your leader but since he isnt really the most active guy in sgw and since perhaps this would be a nice SGW debate here we are...
Point me to a guy who has chosen such a splendid name...

Re: Janissaries
Janissaries were Turkish troops yes but they were Balkans+ Slovenia Slaves. To explain Turkish army came forcibly took yung none muslim man from their families and make them fight their own families/nations they were even paid to do it
I am sure the one who picked the name knew all of this and sees it ok. But I was wondering does community sees it as ok. I for one dont...I mean the name can be whatever but this one is indirectly insulting to some nationalities and I for once wouldnt proudly wore a TAG with such a name...
Thats what I thought...

Re: Janissaries
Yes they were drafted, but we do that sometimes in the United States too
It is hard to pass judgement on older civilizations, by today's standards every older civilization would be deemed barbaric.

Re: Janissaries
I came up with the name, because it isn't just a word for a turkish troop but it also describes Loyal guards or guardians. Which is what I considered us to be, also if you have a problem with that fact Turkey took Slovenia slaves, Rome took slaves from all over the world, including their own people, not to mention they also crucified slaves for not meeting work loads and as a form of punishment for theft and what not.
So if you're here to lecture us about our name, I would look in the mirror first, the difference with us is, we are not emulating Turkish Troops and I took the named based off it meaning and nothing else.
Its like someone not using the world Emperor because a Japanese Emperor ordered the deaths of tens of thousands of people.
If you want to talk further add me to msn, mailto:fuileadan@hotmail.com

Re: Janissaries
Actually they were kiddnapped babbies raised as shock troops and sultans bodyguards (oh the irony eh lol)...
Take my word for it... No better authority on Slavic-Turkish relations than Brdavs
And semi on topic... Slovenia stemerolled over Turkey in the European basketball championship last night... payback for all those centuries of living in fear!
