Mercenary question

I did a quick search of the rules and on the forum and i wanted to know what do untrained mercs do? are they good for anything?

in the beginning of the game, if you didnt have SS, you could buy the mercs and give them to your officers, it was a way to transfer naq, loosing some naq, but it was the only way, it can still be used that way

and there is another option too, it is a way to keep naq safe, lets say you do not have SS, so you can not transfer your naq to a friend to hold, and your bank is small and full, buying untrained mercs will keep your naq safe, since they cant be destroyed like the weapons can, or killed like def mercs, and attack mercs if you attack
