Re: It's thanksgiving...

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in Canada. And I'm very thankful that I'm not some one who isn't fortunate enough to have the basic needs. :(

Word I'm looking for is what canadian is for canada...but for United States...I DONT WANT TO USE AMERICAN BTW!!!
Because Americans are as much livin in Seattle as livin in Bogota or Montevideo! (America is from Alaska to Patagonia, in proper geography)

You see?

Re: It's thanksgiving...

yes, however, the proper word in english is American. And when you say that, people know you mean they're from the united states. Otherwise... if you want to be really technical and people will look at you a bit odd for your use of grammer, you can say "the citizens of the USA". or some variation of that.

Agreed for two last ones, but why do you think in spanish they have "Americanos" and "Estadosunidenses" words?
You agree that North+South America is America, as it's like Eurasia, for Europe+Asia! ;) Isn't it?
It's United States of America, but NOT America in itself, see what I mean? It would be like if UK decided to call themselves United Kingdom of Europe. Because they are alone in the continent so they could take it, but we would call them still UK, not Europe[ans]!

Re: It's thanksgiving...

You are right Apop that Americans could be interpreted as from the Americas (consisting of North, South, and Latin America). The difference and what has been accepted in society is to establish "Americian" to refer to people from the US.

In this case a word that could be used to describe one of two continents or one of three regions of the world is used to refer to a country. English could mean that you are from England rather than what lauguage you speak or that your heritage is Enlish rather than you are born in England. Compare Spain and Spanish... someone can say they are Spanish but not be from Spain. They could be from Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, etc. Granted they would say Brazilian, Bolivian, Mexican, but 'American' is probably taken from the last part of the United States of America with the 'n' thrown on the end making people American.

spacey, first of all, in Brazil they speak Portuguese, since they were a colony of Portugal, not Spain ;)

and i agree with apophis here, by the way apophis, "Estadosunidenses" looks a lot like a portuguese word, well not exactly a word, cause that doesnt exist :-D , but close, since we call usa, Estados Unidos da America

u can call the citizens of USA has North Americans (and we just neglect canada, like everyone does ;) lol j/k )

Re: It's thanksgiving...

I try to use United States instead of America, but in some situations it does not work. I was in Canada once during their Thanksgiving, it is different but I liked it.

Re: It's thanksgiving...

Los Estado Unidenses I believe is Spanish, not portuguese.

Also, thanksgiving in french is L'action de grace
