Our economic growth is great at the moment, but the little people are suffering. When you say that "it's not as bad as it is made out to be", its clear that you haven't been effected by the change. In order to understand just how much impact it is having, you need to be talking to the little people earning a minimum wage in this country. The ones who do the jobs no one else wants to do. Be it primary industries, factories or process workers. All of their wages have been slashed, yet they still have to pay double taxes on their petrol. Their grocery bills are rising and their electricity and water bills will more than double next year under the Howard government.
The majority of Australians are not multi-millionaires, therefore the way Howard is running the show, the lower class will suffer while the rich get richer.
It's time for a change.
Okay, let me explain a little about electricity. Rudd does not want to spend money on Nuclear power, but rather on "clean coal technology".
Not only is Nuclear CLEAN, it is also safe. Currently more radiation is being released into the atmosphere through coal than nuclear powerplants, and the gap is huge. Another benifit of this is that it provides CHEEP electricity. for exmaple if the construction cost is 1 B$, 1 cents / KWH is MORE than enough to charge just for the cost of creating the plant, and some money (500mil $ ) for deconstructing. Then add a little more for some profit. Currently we are paying between 10-15 cents /kwh so as you can see nuclear is MUCH cheeper.
Now back to oil. It doesnt matter if we remove the tax or not,..in the next 20-50 years, the end of CHEEP oil will come. Its common sense. As the supply decreases and demand increases prices will increase. So unless we find an alternative to oil, which hasnt been found, oil prices will continue to increase. So removing the oil tax will only provide temparary relif, whist giving false hope to the masses in austrlaia. And btw, we have one of the cheepest prices of petrol in the world.
And as for the IR laws, tommorow i will be doing research so i can read exactly what it is so I will comment on that later. And what you dont realise is that austrlia is not millionairs, austrlia has a high MIDDLE CLASS. The more money you make, the more tax you get, ultimatly leaving a middle class.
One last thing, when you say doing something is better than doing nothing at all, in relation to global warming, making 20% of austlrias electricity from renewable electricty (solar etc) is a BAD idea. What you dont understand in order to make these solar panels it requires OIL to manifuacture, transport etc. And it also takes a LARGE area, meaning ALOT of solar panels, to generaate the same amount of electricy as one nuclear powerplant. i dont know the exact stats but its huge.

Ok, that is just foolish logic there.
So, because in 20 years we will have to pay more for a carrot, we should all start paying $8 a carrot now and just get used to it?
I honestly can't believe you justr tried to justify and validate the double tax on petrol... *shakes head* Do you own a car?
As for the Solar Panels. Correct, oil will be need to create them and set them up, but after that... no more oil. Think beyond tomorrow.
It's not a matter of luck; it's just a matter of time.

yhmm
ok we have 2 scenarios
first one..
we have 10 oil left, it requires 8 oil to make enough solar power as 1megawatt nuclear powerplant.. (i think 1 megawatt is wrong).
on the other hand we need .5 oil to make 1000000 x as much electricty as solar pwoer. Which is the logical idea?
And getting rid of the tax will give australians the false sense of security. You shall see in the next couple years. And yes i am a car owner. I work. I drive. And austrlaia has the cheepest oil prices in the world. Well one of them,... why dont you ask some of your friends from around the world how much they pay per litre of pertrol?

Re: Future Of Australia
We don't need broad band networks in the bush! for a few hundred thousand people at most put lines everywhere?
Never heard of the taxes on petrol being removed, but sounds like somethig that would be great...for getting votes. When you do that demand will increase (a little) causing the prices to rise faster, it will cause inflation to increase (because there isn't as much money going to the government) so your interest rates will increase. They will take it one way or another lol.
I think labor has promised more then the liberals in spending stuff everywhere with crap campaigns in every state promising them "their share", there has been over 1billion promised to WA's roads and infrastructure. If you promise more money, it's just more inflation. The reserve bank increases the rate, so the government increases "the relief", the reserve bank increases the rate some more, so the government gives out more money. It is John Howard's fault the interest rates have increased, but if labor get it they will spend even more then him! The only thing going up are the interest rates and money that gets thrown around by the government. If you spend 1billion on roads, that's just taking builders (which we have a shortage of) away from other projects.
Ohh and the reserves bank report on the IR laws, said they didn't have an impact on inflation, which to me means some people are getting pay rises, people that are currently getting paid too much are getting fired. Most of the increased unemployment is probably just from people moving in between jobs.
Nuclear power is better but where are we going to get rid of all the by products of that? still, i'd prefer nuclear power to any other source of energy.
Did anybody promise a global emissions scheme where individual businesses have to pay for their emissions? because i want one of those so much!! It's free to pollute the environment, it shouldn't be.
Also i'd vote for anyone who promised to "phase out" smoking in Australia because smoking is just duhhh. How to do that? u can only buy cigarettes in Australia if you are born before 1990 from Jan 1st 08. Get caught selling cigarettes to somebody born after that, you get fined like selling to a minor. You don't need to have the right to kill yourself.

Re: Future Of Australia
Two elections ago our current prime minister John Howard tried to assign blame to the Royal Australian Navy for the Children Overboard Scandal.
He, like many prime ministers, have done some good.
However, this event was unforgivable in my eyes because the defence force are unable to speak for themselves politicaly (its called mutiny if they do).
This was the time I decided never ever to vote for John Howard again.

Now that is scary...
A terrifying thought. I personally don't really care. I have a future in teaching and party views on education will be deciding my vote. So far, I don't see much of a difference between the 2

Well me and 4 mates are car pooling it down to the local school today which just happens to be opposite to the Air Force Base I live on. Although what Robe said is true, it is also true that Rudd will be terrible for the Australian Defence Force. So needless to say my 4 mates and I will be voting for Howard and atleast 90% of the guys I have asked in the Defence Force have said they will be voting for Howard.
Vote Howard!
Vote Howard!

Your employer now has the power to make you sign an AWA which states that you will now be payed a flat rate of just $18, $16 or even $12, whatever they want, even on weekends and public holidays.
Brilliant for businesses and Employers, but in the end, the workers suffer, we get paid less when we are worth more.
God forbid this fellow find out there's a country out there called Mexico.

Well its really a no brainer for Defence employees, Labour is notorious for cutting back funding for the Defence force and then soon as we need to deploy members around the world we find that we don't have enough to go around. I know for a fact that directly because of labour's choices many years ago the Navy is now currently 2000 people undermanned. Of the 180 positions for Marine Technicians in Australian Submarines only 96 if those positions are filled and of those 96 people 80% of them are wanting to discharge from the service or change category. And this is all because of labour cutting recruiting and budgeting for the Defence 11 years ago so we no longer have enough people to fill these postions.
Howard has been doing his best to boost recruitment in his years in Government as you probably have seen the amount of Defence Force ads in recent times has increased alot and also Howard has introduced the ADF Gap Year, to try and boost recruitment. Well thats all I have time for, its time to go and vote for my preferred PM.

What coolmick says is correct.
If you vote Labour, you are voting for education and healthcare
If you vote Liberal, you are voting for business and defence
We don't pay enough tax to do all well
If you vote Labour, you are voting for education and healthcare
If you vote Liberal, you are voting for business and defence
We don't pay enough tax to do all well

Yeah its $100 a tank for my car and i get 500-600km a tank tops, and im about 40km out from the edge of the city, and considering its the biggest city in the world, it takes alot of driving to get places. Double taxes can go die
