Re: Future Of Australia

Watching the election on Channel 7 at the moment and swapping between that and the Empire Strikes Back on Channel 10.

Seems Howard has lost his seat and therefore Prime Ministership regardless of the results and with swings towards Labor in all states bar Western Australia.

Last Federal election I voted Liberal as the Labor Party was in disarray and disorganised so while it stood by ideals and values I agreed with, I did not believe it could rule effectively or deliver on what it stood for. Since Rudd has come into power, Labor's had a breath of new life and today I put in my vote for them.

State elections i've always been Labor for the same reason as above. The Liberals at State level were disorganised and had an incompetate leadership (Doyle & co) and as such voted Bracks.

As with all elections, the Important thing is that one party does not absolutely dominate and that there remains enough independants to retain some sort of balance of power. We've got interesting times ahead.

Now back to Battle of Hoth...

Re: Future Of Australia

Thank you Australia!

Finally a smart PM who's not going to brown nose to get what he wants.

Kevin Rudd is going to be Australia's official PM very soon.

It is a wonderful day for Australia.

Aussie Aussie Aussie. Oi Oi Oi.

Tonight I am the proudest I have ever been of Australia for finally getting rid of John Howard.

As Big Kev would say if he were still alive, "I'm excited!" :)

It's not a matter of luck; it's just a matter of time.

Re: Future Of Australia

Only time will tell, lets hope we don't have another Gough Whitlam and Rudd doesn't try to change too much, too quickly.
Never argue with idiots. They bring you down to their level and beat you with years of experience!

But yes Nuclear has a small footprint and it does pump out a lot of energy but our biggest concern is the placement and water usage. They consume vast amounts of water and last time I check the M-D is bone dry unless we want to run the things on carp. The initial set up costs are also massive.

And clean coal works, we have large coal reserves and the funding spreads to geothermal, wave and wind. And the clean fuels scheme means that bio-fuels will us less dependent on oil. And already most of our oil from the Bass Strait goes to Japan dirt cheap. The double tax is idiotic because we have to cover our losses in other sectors where we sell to save face. With Bio-Fuels and Hydrogen on the way we can step away from coal.

Kyoto? USA is the laughing stock because they didn't want to because big business has their cash hands embedded that far up their senators that you couldn't do otherwise. There is no restraint and thus more oil to burn? Kytoto is bad? What planet are you people from?

And what I don't get is that Howard never agreed to anything nuclear. The majority of people were against it so they dropped it to stay popular. Kevin may have done so as well. Frankly I wouldn't mind nuclear, we can learn from everyone else mistakes.

And so that's it? Energy? IR laws sucked, green Australia sucked, just look at Gunns pulp mill. Drought relief, war relations? Howard dropped the ball many many times. Lets hear what you guys think about why he should have stayed? We won so Aussies for the most part agree with us. Time for you to defend your support for the uno-browed puppet.

Re: Future Of Australia

A lot of people have commented that a reduction in petrol/gasoline/diesel tax would be nice...but...

that money that the government takes in taxes goes to support health care, government officials salaries, maintaining roads, lavish dinners and limosine rides, affordable housing, paying for government scandals, funding police services, etc.

It can't be said that the government should take less money and the government should improve/expand services... doesn't make sense....

Re: Future Of Australia

I'm not going to be writing a long post but I will write a couple of dot points for why I support Howard:

-Brought the Government debt to 0 after the last labor administration made a 9-10 billion dollar debt.

-Boosted the Australian economy to crazy heights even when other world economies were decreasing.

-Invaded Iraq and Afghanistan/War on Terror.

-Increased foreign relations with USA and many Asian countries.

-Gave extra funding to Defence to attempt to boost recruiting after Labor cut funding for recruiting.

-Sent troops to PNG to stabilise social unrest.

They are just some of the things of why I support John Howard, for me he has been the PM that Australia needed. Of course he did push some issues aside such as the environment and healthcare, but like always there isn't enough money for everything. So don't get me wrong I do believe it is important to bring a Labor Government in every once in awhile so they can focus on the things a Liberal Government doesn't focus on.

But when it comes down to it I am a Liberal man, I believe that their policies are better for Australia.

-And now we have 30 bill in the clear? That was all saved for the election spending campaign? If they had put it to use then perhaps or if they had been nice enough to break even but they overtaxed and all that money is sitting there. Hopefully labour will put it to good use.

-Boosted the Australian economy to crazy heights even when other world economies were decreasing.

-Yes and while it was good for locals, our exports have been suffering because of the higher value of the Aussie dollar and as an export country that is pretty bad for us. Still, it made paypal transactions a whole lot sweater :D

-Invaded Iraq and Afghanistan/War on Terror.

-Invaded Iraq and Afghanistan/War on Terror... Alright to be fair, yes good call. But do it NOT to place our heads up an incompetent President's backside, do it to help Iraq. And at least tell us the truth about who died....

-Increased foreign relations with USA and many Asian countries.

-Well done. You are the first person to come up with a valid point (A few actually but this one strikes home). Still I see Rudd doing very well with Asia and big whoop about USA. Best deal we had with them went down the hill after we got kick backs from Saddam.

-Gave extra funding to Defence to attempt to boost recruiting after Labor cut funding for recruiting.

-And we had minor engagements at the time, not to mention were weren't the Yank's puppet at the time. Today is a different political atmosphere and I think Labour is aware that we need to maintain our defence forces. I certainly hope so for your sake, Luke's and everyone else who is in the defence forces. Just don't mention the Collin's Class...

-Sent troops to PNG to stabilise social unrest.

-And dropped the ball. No aid has been sent to the western border where Indonesians are conducting a mini Sudan of their own. Having lived in PNG for a large chunk of my life, to call what little aid we sent there as helpfull is rather pitiful. WE bent over too far for Indonesia and when we bowed to their complaints about giving those Papuan's refugee status that cemented it for me.

And =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> for a well constructed defence for the Liberal party. Thanks Mick for putting forward a good argument.

Re: Future Of Australia

i dont really like the idea of nuclear power, i mean yeah its great, but i think that its just not safe and efficent enough yet. not tomention it would be a significant terrorist target (but hey thats just my opinion)

someone said their was no replacement for oil...well yes their is...its called gas (LPG) costs 5000max to get it installed and the price is half of what petrol is.

people are saying what labor did a decade ago, their were differnt people in-charge back then and times change, i think rudd would not cut defence budgets, and would not reak the havok some are saying.

like they said on the news (yeah i know you shouldent belive what they say 100% but i think this was explained well)

rudd will micro-manage his ministers, like a company, and not focus on just one or two things, but try and balance them all out
