I found a player "Shawt" id=38067 and clicked on thier allaince tag, only to get a message saying alliance does not exist.

Actually, it says 'No Alliance Found'... and it means the alliance was deleted, although I don't remember exactly how this happens (seen it a good few times before).
Gone, left, no longer here.
