Re: Choice of words
If anyone wondered who was the only person to vote the man with the double hockey sticks was a bad word, it was me.
man=he
double hockey sticks =LL
In today's world, many people tend to lose sight of the meaning of those word and throw them out casually. But when you use those words, you are still invoking upon its meaning.
When you say something like "H*ll, blah blah blah", you are already starting the sentence off on a bad footing. It's always good to stay positive, especially on a volitile forum like this. It's always good to contribute to a optimistic enviroment. And such words aren't conductive to such.
But then again, I'm somewhat obsessed. But then again, extreme organizations like ACLU, NRA, and Greenpeace exist for a reason. ^_~

Nice generic remark. Do agree tho.
Has to have to do with words having an emotional value aside from their clear dictionary-definition..
Btw, in the case presented, hell is totally not bad. It isn't in general, but here, not at all.
Although I don't entertain the notion of hell being a nice place, the word doesn't worry me much.

Ok, that's it !!! I'm offended .... >.>
been to hell and back and reading all those words brings back my traumatised years there >.>
Nah seriously .... some feel the need to wave the scepter of controle a bit too much.
Perhaps mods should be screened and tested with a few pages of test material which has some hidden words usage in it.
I.e. let them show their ability to read between the lines and see things in context.
Have a piece of txt which is a discussion between 2 people, with several word insinuations and other bad language usage in it. Have a max number of points which one could accumilate with the test, and for each found flaw or moddable phrase or word, the mod taking the test gets points. When he has less then 60% of the points ... then he or she should not be a mod.
just an idea .....

Does sound interesting though.. not that it is really necessary considering the level of (most of) the current mods.
I'm just saying.. it's not that bad an idea.

Re: Choice of words
the end user would not notice any of this apart from having capable mods.
It 'could' merely garuantee that the mods have a certain form of knowledge and insight in handling the english language.

People complain this forum is way too serious, you really think that's a proper move to a less serious and funner forum?
Jack, Jack.. how would such a little trial (kinda like what we have now) be any different from checking up on someone's past and present abilities as I *HOPE* (and remember) is happening right now?
Kinda strange to see you agitated about it, mate. You of all people should know it's not a big deal more than happens now.

I'm not aggitated.Just pointing out that it's a wrong move to a better forum, it's a good idea, but it would add yet another level of super seriousness, which this has too much of already.
I'm not looking at the short term, I'm looking at the long term effect.
I daresay that would be an insult, had I not known that I myself have the intelligence to look at the long term effect as well.
I just fail to see what damage it would do to have more mods that have a proven near-native grasp of the English language, who can see through spelling errors and mother tongue interferences.. Stuff like that.
Ah well.. seriousness.. it's just a game forum. How serious could it possible get??

Re: Choice of words
It would indeed add a level of seriouness, but not for the regular forum users, but for the mods. And this is what was about, the users having more fun with words which may be listed as bad but used in a fully allowable manner.
As it is atm, a lot of users prolly feel like the are walking on egg shells (or on their toes) when they use certain words they would normally use in everyday situations.
As addition: Its great that there are a few youngsters amoungst us, but euhm... isnt the greater majority at least 13 years and older ?
There are quite a few sites that have the 13 age as a border for which under they should ask their parents permission to come here, mostly because of language usage.
I don't know about the rest of you, but this is a wargame, I would expect that most people are above 13 years. Especially the ones that pay for certain parts of the game play and frequent visitors of the forum.
