Re: Choice of words

Well let me start off by saying to jedi that I appreciate his veiw and outlook on this situation and his cool demeaner. Also let me encourage this discussion and any like it as it does help forum when handled properly.

Now to pull a timeline of events

on Jan 9th, this topic was posted in main SGW in general section
viewtopic.php?f=101&t=101516

on Jan 12th, this topic was put in the Announcement section
viewtopic.php?f=71&t=101808

As of Jan 12th these rules came into effect. Now there were a few days allowed for everyone to read over and voice opinions about these topics.

Now to address this topics issue.
By all means I support a discussion on what rules are concider "Cursing" or ""swearing". But until that time I must do what I can and that is pull from my own personal experiance. In that the word "Hell" is much like the word ""Ass". Both have two meanings and two uses. Ass is a donkey. Ass is also your backside, or someone acting in a contrary manner. Hell is a place of eternal damnation. Having a discussion about heaven and hell is not cursing at all. Telling someone to go to hell is.

I have a fair grasp of the english language. I don't have an grasp on any other language.

Now, I ask you all this. Why have rules if they are not enforced? On one side I have a group of people PMing me complaining of cursing and such, on the other side I have people talking of fredom of speech. I look at it like this. These forums are public. These forums are privately owned. These forums have rules. Now lets break them down.

These forums are public
They are open for anyone to use.

These forums are privately owned
That means when your in someone elses house you pretty much do as they wish or you will be asked to leave.

These forums have rules
Again why have them if no one is going to follow them.

I want to point out to all the mod bashers that by the rules put in place 9 days ago that I had and have full right and authority to not only warn but also bann for repeated violations of any standing rule. Yet I chose the route of sutle modding, but to no avail.

Keep in mind all these rules were laid out for the community to speak there mind about. So why is it now there is all these crys of foul play?

To close, if anyone feels there was an error made, or that anything is wrong with the modding done I encourage you to contact said Mod and Jack your ombudsdude.. I do fully agree with the discussion going on here and will gladly accept whatever the general public deems acceptable. I encourage anyone to lobby for any addition or removal an any standing or needed rule. Simply do it in the correct manner and follow the guidelines set forth.

Until a conclusion is found the profanity modding will continue. Unfortunately enforcement of the conciquences will soon follow up.

Actually, is the language really needed? If you really want to goad someone is PM not enough? MSN? IRC? Simply speak like you would want your 13 yrs old son/daughter, brother/sister, neice/nephew, or any young family member to speak when at a religous event, family gathering, wedding, funeral, or in front of other kids of the same age or younger.

As a result of this thread a commity will get together and redefine the "Banned" curse words.

Re: Choice of words

In general, mods live by the word filter list - if someone tries to circumvent it, then they're breaking the rules. However - there are situations such as this - where it is wrong to filter words such as 'hell' and 'ass' because they are perfectly allowable words when used in one context, but take on a different meaning, and might be deemed offensive, when used in another; in which case mods must make a judgement call, befitting the rules.

The problem we have here is not whether what Lore did was right or wrong - by applying the forum rules strictly he was right, but that is not to say all mods would have done it - the problem IS where the (reasonable) level needs to be set, bearing in mind the young age of some users.

Additionally, before anyone brings it up - 'freedom of speech' doesn't apply - we're not in any sovereign state where that myth is applicable, it's a privately owned forum in which certain rules are set.

Re: Choice of words

About three years ago, I would have voted yes. Now, probably not. It's really a matter of overexposure and how people are becoming less affected by these 'taboo' words. However, certain contexts of the word (such as, go to hell) would be inappropriate in my eyes.

Yes, but I'm saying if I replaced hell with another word like Heaven or Chesey Tots I know I wouldn't have gotten a warning. The rule is that they're throwing warnings now even if you substitue a word.

Also I'm seeing if anyone else thinks hell is a naughty word. I myself and as you can see many people in the community don't think it is. Plus if we let this by I think it won't be too long before they step up the list of words not allowed to use and put like stupid or dumb on there.

Its a forum. If people don't like certain words they can choose not to read it. No one is making them read the forums.

Re: Choice of words

well i certainly don't see it as a naughty word but i don't make the rules or have the power to exert rules.
if you asked me, would you have edited the post, i say no, i wouldn't have.
but i would not have gone post about stuff if a mod edits my posts, they need to do stuff too right...
what i mean is i don't care about writing hell..don't care if it were to happen my post got edited (unless of course it was edited in a bad way... like completeley changing the meaning) but of cours ethat is because i don't hold the forum very highly so i don't care much about this in general.... it's just some time-spending, reading funny stuff, maybe posting some stuff but nothing much more.... still mostly trading

Re: Choice of words

I don't know of a context in which it would denote something bad (besides the obvious LOL).

In jedi's post he used it to emphasise the meaning, as far as i understand. If in this case it's a 'bad' word then they have to mod words like 'bloody' or 'damned', etc...

In short: Not a bad word ;)
