how come some people are ranked 8000 and they already ascended

because your shell account then gets reset so you can work to the top again

Get in the top 100, you'll slowly earn glory and reputation points, when you have enough you have the option to ascend...

There's other steps after that, but I'm sketchy as to what they are.

in a nut shell:

ascention happens when a player acheives a large g&r score. Their main account is reset (they lose everything) and they get to operate an ascended account in parallel with their main. I think.
