There is something to say for "newspeak" (stripping down a language to it's bare essentials and beyond) and "5 minutes of Hate" (allowing everyone to be passionate for a while, only to demand dispassionateness for the rest of the day).. ;)
I think this thread is careening into a much bigger dung heap than it originally intended to discuss. But I love it.. oh, indeed. :)

Re: Sick description

I do have to agree that this word could be used to create flash back moments for victims. Being one myself and witnessing it onto another I do state that if someone does find themselves insulted they should present their case and share their feelings about this. Although I can see your point of view in saying people should be considerate to the possibility of offending them or creating dramatic episodes to re-occur. With that said I will refrain from using the word myself and apologize for doing so. But still think that people should look up words to make sure they are fully understanding them.

Well put. :)
I disagree with your remark that people should present their case, you say you want people to post their stories of what happened to them, or did I misunderstand you? Probably.

Requiring or even hoping people will look up words they do not understand before using them or replying to them, is unrealistic. But we established that before.. it's an applaudable wish. :)

I don't see how that's good...that means you have no hope to get your situation better, it will lead people to think: "life **** anyway, nomater what I do". It will make workers less productive, if they know they'll always live in this situation nomatter what happens.
If we want a society full of hopeless people, that must be a good idea.
Otherwise, let's not hope for it, life would be pretty useless that way.
Isn't it because of your situation you wish this? Others work while you don't (joking lol)
I am supporting fully a system where the diploms determines the work, I couldnt careless what political party it sounds, but allowing everyone everywhere is WRONG, it lowers qualtiy of diploms, nomatter what your origins are, what count for me is, the intelligence of the person. 8)

Not hopeless.. productive, happy (because they know no different) and mindless drones. Very good for getting things done.
We'll finally be able to do some real building again. :)
Besides, controlled management of 99% of the world population makes it that much easier to solve certain chronic world problems as food and water shortage. ;)

All this is good, but off topic. Hence, it actually isn't good. :?
Ah well..

Ah well..

Care to tell me WHAT THE HELL would be the purpose to make everyone stupid and clones of what they made Charlie Chaplin be in Modern Times, if noone benefits from this production?
You start to scare me alot there...that's even worse than totalitarism policies...because at least in them you serve the master, the duce, the fuhrer or whatever...here it's for no idea who and no even brainstorm to worship the leader and be happy to be mindless drones to serve, so as I said, it's even worse.
Who would benefit from 99% exploitation of population by the way?
That would even make people regret the USSR or dicatorships like this!

Seriously you scare me there Auriel.

I am sorry, but I will not reply to that as it is, alas, too far off topic.

We could discuss this privately.

Yes it is a misunderstanding, Im not saying they should just start posting stories of dramatic or tragic events. I've always been the one to belive it is best to talk about what bothers you the most. Things get worse when they are bottled up. However I must iterate posting in forum is not the anwser, talking with a loved one or a therapist is the better option.

Requiring or even hoping people will look up words they do not understand before using them or replying to them, is unrealistic. But we established that before.. it's an applaudable wish.

This statement seems unrealistic to me. If people wish to speak with ignorance then so be it, but typically one will tell you that you are wrong if you do so.

my apologies I will as well try to keep on subject.

I agree that it is ridiculous to censure everything.. ;)

As for the dictionary-reference: the point with plebeian street language is that it cannot be constrained in set definitions such as the ones you gave for "rape". Theoretically, you could draw up a percentage chart; which meaning is used more often. :) I think I know which will win.. ;)
Considering the majority of this forum is indeed sub-par in the use of English, secondary meaning can hardly be given the credit it would in a normal, English-speaking community. :P Or can it?

;) Do tell me.

In this case secondary meaning should be given credit. If I was to raid and attack your account I would be raping your account. I think it is great to see a person that does not speak English as their first language use words in the correct context especially if the word has multiple meanings.

I hear what you are saying - but I'd wager that 99% of people who use it don't use in the context your alluding to. It doesn't necessarily boil down to words having different meanings, but more along the lines of how people perceive those words, and what the first meanings are to spring to mind.

While that word can be inappropriate in certain contexts, this is the internet and it isn't all flowers and rainbows.

If you don't like certain words, there are filters out there that block them out when they come accross on the web.

Need I say more?

My main point about all of this was that it is a sick word to use in a game. I don't consider 'kill' being a sick word.

Which is trully sick.

Time and time again I see this hillarious tendency to take offense at the slightest hint of profanity (etc.) when notions of death and killing are taken for granted. It`s a true gun-ho culture oxymoron if you ask me...

It`s the internet, you`re here of your free volition + we`re here playing a war and destruction game... Whoever has the gaul to to bring up profanity or sexuality as an issue in the games that primarily provide entertainment via killing, and even claim bad influence on the kids has balls of steel and the brains of a republican (read: no brains whatsoever).

Christ, if you`re gonna be sanctimonious atleast get your friggin priorities straight.
Bunch of FOX pundits you are... (reference to the mass effect sex scenes "scandal")
FFS shooting/assasinating hundreds/thousands of guys is a OK but a piece of blue ass, a curse or a word rape are "sick", "corruptive" and "harmfull for the wee children"...

WTH is happening to this world?

"I`m sorry that my nick or linguistic figure offends your morals... Here, let me change it and we can go back to the nice clean fammily fun of headshots and whiping out of millions."
