Eating Meat and Why?

This is sort of a continuation of a convo I was having the Tauri section, but I wanted to open up the doors for some more ideas and theories on this.

I eat meat. I like eating meat. I do not eat sheep. I refuse to eat sheep because I have a deep adoration for the animal and can't bring myself to do so. This may seem like a double standard, but we all do this, and I want to know why.

Why is it we can bring ourselves to eat a Chicken, but we wouldn't go eat a Pelican? Why wouldn't we eat a Swan? Why wouldn't we eat a bear? Why wouldn't we eat a horse?

I'm aware that there are come countries that eat almost anything, which could include the above things, but I have never seen a "Swan" or "Bear" section in the local supermarket, and to my knowledge we don't have a "swan farm" breeding them to eat for dinner.

I just think its odd that humans can rate some animals over others. Western culture doesn't eat dogs, because they are our pets, but people have chickens as pets who they are happy to eat.

What is the reason for this way of thinking? Why have we assigned importance to some animals and not all? Is it a matter of who is the cutest? Strongest? Cleverest?

What are your thoughts...

It's not a matter of luck; it's just a matter of time.

Indeed. I would have a flock in my backyard if I had a big enough yard. I find them to be adorable. More so than any dog or guinnepig.

Umm, are you secretly from New Zealand? (j/k)

There is nothing wrong with not wanting to eat a particular type of food. I myself am a meatasaurus and thoroughly enjoy it.
As to the liking of sheep...I prefer dogs.

Hey now... I don't make love to sheep, I just love them. As soon as I got me some land, I will get myself one. Probably call him Shawn.

Wonder where that New Zealand 'myth' came from. Disturbing :?

Re: Eating Meat and Why?

It all comes down to taste me thinks. Chicken just tastes wonderful, so does a nice T-bone or sirloin. Fish is great as well. Now, I did have crocodile and ostrich before and I must say they taste like a derivative of chicken.

Sheep and goat meat just smells perverse. Hate it, would never eat it. Pelican? Well, I watched some guys on TV eat a pelican on Survivor and yes, you guessed it, it tasted like chicken so yeah, its all up to taste why we are so selective. Dog and cat just don't taste right so thousands of years of selections have given us the cow, the fish, the chicken, and other delicatessen which do not include horse or pelican or whatever unless you go to a speciality restaurant where u get such things as well as bugs and cockroaches and stuff like that if you really like the taste. Majority does not and therefore it wouldn't sell and nobody would make money out of it so they keep chicken to lay eggs we love, fry the pieces to make them finger licken good, keep some cows for milk, meat etc. and thats it. Nothing else to it. It's all about money once again :D

Re: Eating Meat and Why?

I don't eat meat at all. Why? As simply as I can put it, I just don't like it. I've never really liked it, for various reasons. Plus, I feel a lot better since I quit eating meat, so I don't really have any logical reason to go back to being carnivorous.

Re: Eating Meat and Why?

Dog and cat meat is not good at all, its chewy, its tough, a dog takes almost a year to grow to full maturity, we kill cows in a matter of months AND they're about 4 times bigger.

its all about conveniance and taste, which is where the social stigma started.

Sometimes, but at this point I wouldn't blame it on not eating meat. I know what your getting at, and I was like that at first--mainly because I decided to quit eating meat before I even knew what vegan was, or how to do it--but now I've learned of a lot of other sources for protein and the vitamins and other things people get from meat.

It was like learning to riding a bike. Only I--metaphorically speaking--started learning how without training wheels, on a motorcycle... But now I've got my balance and I'm riding just fine. :-D
