You seem to be continually missing the point, and have yet to actually clarify why you think 'Hell' is an offensive word. And it is NOT (repeat, NOT) a word that is banned from prime time television and/or schools - my son came home from school the other day and when I asked what he'd done at school, he said that they'd being doing some Religious Education and they talked about God and the Devil and Heaven and Hell. And I direct you to the numerous places in the World that are called 'Hell'. I direct you to advertisements on billboards and in magazines kids are able to buy, advertising the films 'Hellboy' & 'Hellboy 2'.
Are you also saying that the forum member with the username 'Hellfire' can no longer use that name on the forum?
Yes, 'Hell' can be used to offend or curse - but so can many others and to ban/filter them all, when they have perfectly legitimate and acceptable meanings would not only be a never-ending task, but would also be rather stupid as we'd not be able to write anything.
In fact there's a good example in my last paragraph - the word 'stupid' if used in a certain context can be used to deliberately offend or belittle, do you propose that we ban that too? And I reiterate the point in my last post - that some people find the belief of others in 'Heaven' or 'God' offensive to their intelligence - but I don't suppose for one minute that anybody proposes to ban/filter these words, and nor should they!
What about the following words?:
- nuts
- balls
both are derogatory/cursing words when used in a certain context, but perfectly legitimate in others......
- 'gay' can be used in an offensive or derogatory manner, but it isn't banned.......
Bottom line - it is a word that isn't banned or filtered on these forums, but (as stated previously) can be modded as appropriate by the forum staff - if needed; and banning/filtering all words which
could be used in an offensive/cursing context would be a pointless never-ending task.
I think my stance on this is clear - and won't change! I have 3 kids, and I'm all for bringing them up as well as I can and encouraging them not not to swear or use words offensively. We can only do so much in here and I personally think the balance is as good as it can be without going into overkill. But it doesn't matter what we do in here - the fact is there are some people out there who do swear in front of their kids - their kids then think it's acceptable and then pick it up in the playground. Kids also hear things when they're just out and about in the street, or in the town - you just have to be sat on a bus or train, or in a restaurant or stood in a queue to hear people (adults and older kids) swearing.
As I said - the balance is good here (And to be honest I've never seen so many people use 'Hell' in an offensive context until you brought the subject up - which is another thing about 'people' - tell them they're not allowed to do something and they try and find ways to rebel, sometimes not mentioning things is the best way to not cause a problem!)) and I for one don't think it needs to be changed - which will be my final word on the matter.
I suggest that if you really do want to take this further that you ontact one of the Forum Admins directly - but please try and clarify your comments, as I believe nothing you have said so far (or anything you could ever say) would justify the banning/filtering of the word 'Hell'.
