This week we will talk about the PAK-FA, Russia answer to the F-22 & F-35 JSF. The stats for this fighter is not known as of yet. It will be put in to production in 2010, it was originally suppose be 2009, but due to technaical problems it was pushed back a year. The pic is a artist impression of the plane. From the looks of it, I would say it's a stealth plane like its American counterparts.

Just to clarify, Which PAK-FA aircraft are we discussing here? the pic provided isnt much to go by. also, there are a few aircraft with that name, one from Sukhoi, one from Mikoyan Gurevich.

The Sukuoi company was the designer that won the contract for the PAK-FA. There was a big mess in Russia due to them choosing Sukuoi over MiG. The plane Sukuoi had designed was the Su-47 Berkurt. But due to tech problems, the Su-47 loss it Forward Swept Wings (FSW). So they put conventional wings on it.

dammit... the FSW setup gave it its edge in maneuverability despite its weight. ah well... even tho its a concept at the moment, I'm interested to see what it ends up as.

The conventional wing design is still very maneuverable, but doesn't have the stablilty problems of a FSW design. Of coruse it has loss the coolness factor that a FSW has.

with the onboard systems involved, instability can be used to the pilots advantage. this is what gave it its edge in maneuverability. and yes... FSW just looks cool too

actually, ive been designing a jet concept for an art project for a while now, it too uses a FSW configuration. it just looks awesome

I do that to, but on paper most of the time. Some times I use MS paint. For such a bad program, I think I do alright. I would show one but the forum won't let me.

i generally do mine in Paint because of a lack of control and tolerances on paper. i'd show mine too, but these jets are being used in a story im writing, i cant let them out.

Well the plane I wanted to show was a cross between the F-22 and Su-47.
It had the Raptors body and the Berkut's wings and tail control surfaces. Anyway, we need to get back on the topic.

haha, this PAK-FA project sounds interesting... so is it just purely to match the US's F22 and JSF? and wouldnt it be better for Sukhoi to use a new design rather than just recreating and recycling the Berkut? new engineering philosophies have come about in the last decade, i think it better to start the design again.

The Su-47 was meant for PAK-FA. MiGs plane was the MiG-1.42 & 1.44. Don't ask me why it that MiG is named that. I want to know too. As for redesigning the plane... They had spent millions of Rubes (Russian Dollar) originally designing the aircraft, so they just changed the wing to save money.

It's not really outdated, if it was, then we need to get rid of the F-22. The Raptor was first designed in 1985, so it's a 23 year old design. The Su-47 is a prototype aircraft, so the technology on is cutting-edge.

true, im thinking specifically of the F35 JSF... lol nvm, i has some weird theories anyway

lol now i think of it... the C-130 Hercules transport used widely today was designed ages ago... if i recall correctly, first flight was in the late 50's... lol

but seriously now, to counter the F35 in particular will be a major task... the Helmet Display system and the "first look" weapons system in the JSF wont be easy to emulate.
