if the people where a little more mature around here i would suggest the idea of shutting down the current filter. and mod people more harshly for inappropriate use of certain words.

but hey who am i kidding the collective maturity of the sgw forums is around 5 years old...

hey heres an idea!!! under the stargate rules section have an admin post a list of unpostable words. everyone above basic user votes on the addition/subtraction of words on a bi-monthly basis to help keep an up to date list if a word is desputed lets say the word "**Filtered**" then the filter would be set to turn that word into "rooster" as opposed to our current & vauge system of *modded* , *filtered*,...... words that are on the list will be changed to
"[FORUM RULE #.... VIOLATION"

as for the masking rule it should be done away with.

speaking politely to others is a relative term in that a church group would be horrified if someone referred to god being damned, however we look at truck drivers where they will drop an Fbomb ever 10seconds....
middle ground can be found by allowing language somewhere in the middle but no further... the other thing is that unless you live under a very large rock you have seen & heard every swear/curse/vulgarity at least once if not on a daily basis.

if your ears and eyes haven't cought fire from the burning they will likely not do so anytime soon.....

But seriously, ... WTH. why is this still being debated? Words are words, I'm fine the way it is now. Honestly, if you're under the age where certain words may be too sensitive for you, then you're parents had better be looking over your shoulder at all times, or have a hardass parental block on the internet, because no doubt if you're a 13 yr old boy on the internet you've seen porn at least once. What the hell are a few swear words going to do to corrupt you that a **Filtered** woman on the net hasn't already? And I'm sorry, but I cannot honestly picture akid under this age area being able to play this game well. they would be watching pokeymen or sumn instead.

While I am trying to understand this thread, I am coming across a lot of valid points. First of all, let me state my opinion:

OK, having said that, let me point out the absurdity of what you are proposing to leave in and what you are proposing to ban. I am going to use masking here so please forgive (all you 13 year olds who play this game and frequent this forum).

You cannot say things on the forum like F***ing, but you can use "WTH" which everyone knows means "what the f**k!" or words like fracking and fecking and not get into trouble? And I can also use the word penis but not d**k? I can say butthole but not a**hole? Granted I only use these words when I am talking about Admin (respect is something that is earned, not deserved, Jason, not that you read the boards anyway) or Admin's ridiculous updates.

The fact that I cannot do the above directly but if I couch it in a nice acronym like JIADA or FUBAR it is perfectly acceptable borders on the ludicrous. And the fact that there are places on the Forum (ie. the galactic colosseum) that are accessible by everyone where the codes of conduct are blatantly tossed out the window further demonstrates the absurdity of such actions.

Frankly I would be more concerned that my kid was playing a game developed by a mentally deficient individual that encourages the striving for a mediocre account and the only way to play is to feck other people by being a one-trick pony.

its kind of annoying when you are trying to make a humorous reference to another forum member ie "hidden" who is self proclaimed "lord of the chickens" and not be able to use the word **Filtered**, where as it is understandable that people discussing "size" such a word would be inappropriate at best...... unfortunately this isn't the only word on the filters that has multiple meanings.....

here is a well known word that people don't know much about....
if i remember my history of Europe in the middle ages, the f~word was actually an acronym that stood for "sex" Under Command of the King. which was a tactic used by royalty to encourage the peasants to have more babies after the black death.....there is more to it outside the scope of this thread so i will leave it at that.... but just remember this the next time you hear or see the f~word whoever it is just wants you to know that the "king commands you to make babies"


anyways..... i can't speak for other languages however if English is anything like other languages there are numerous words that have a double meaning and or a meaning that depends on context as the sole indicator of purpose.

Put simply my view is as follows.

Masking: Using words to convey a meaning that is ment to assault a person.
Example: "Your very popular with the boys....well certain types of boys....so do you have problems sitting down after hanging out with the guys"

Example: "How's your mother, I have $20 atm and I heard she gives good rates."

Example: " Here is how you SPELL the word, if you need more help we would be happy to educate you."

The 3 examples are just that examples. These comments are ment to infurate or hurt players.

To be honest I have no problems with comments like the following as they have become part of the every day language used in the world.

Example "WTH are you mad, etc,etc"....."WTH are you doing??? OMG you are the biggest noob I have ever met."
This is the language of online gameing.

Caling persons "Monkeys", or other such names are unacceptable.
Example: calling a German or Austrian a NAZI because of their country of origin.
Example: calling a muslim a Terrorist because of their religion

Example: Calling a person a monkey because they are black.

To sum up I think the context of the post should be kept acceptable and the mods are grown up enough to know when someone is trying to slip a double meaning into a post.

Don't go too far though, persons do joke on te forms saying things like.
Example: "You are the Mister Lover Lover ", etc
There are tons of other examples but you get the gist of my meaning.

That isn't what is meant as masking - masking as we're talking about it is using asterisks to cover up certain letters in a word, although I do see what you mean (and agree).

As for things like WTH becoming part of every day language all over the world - do you mean the abbreviation or the words themselves? Because I don't use the abbreviation, and don't know anybody else that does - unless texting to a mate, which is different because it's 1-1 and not public - and if you mean the words - then they are banned (or the last one at least) because swearing is banned from the forum.

Just because swear words are part of every-day language for a number of people (myself included - I use it when necessary), it does not mean that it should be encouraged (or indeed is right), especially to youngsters. I'm hardly ancient, and yes, as a kid I used to swear - but you hear kids these days and every other word is a swear word and they just sound ignorant and stupid - and should we really be encouraging ignorance?. The constant, overuse of swearing only shows a lack of vocabulary and original thought - and if people cannot express themselves without resorting to it, even if they use it in every day language (such as me), then they do indeed have a vocabulary problem!

Meh - it's all pants - and anyway, my main point is that if abbreviations such as WTH are allowed, then how is that different to masking (using asterisks) to cover up letters or, indeed, using the actual words themselves? Seems strange to ban/allow one, but not the other.

WTH? Acronyms are okay. They're a part of any online community and as Thal said.. kids already know every 'curse' word there is.
'Curse words' are harmless to intelligent people.. acronyms are just letters..

I've said this before...the use of vulgar or distasteful lanuage will only show a child that its okay to use these words and give them the impression that its okay to continue using these words. Its best not to encourage this use of lanuage. Children are impressional and will always look to adults/anyone older then themselves for ways of behavior and lanuage that is deemed apporiate. While many words have multiple meanings and that word(s) can contain both postive and negitive meaning does that mean that all words should be unbanned or banned? My personal feelings are that any word that can be deemed a negitive one should be banned. Why? Cause of my statement above, So, in my opinion they should either all be banned, or all allowed, but you can't have a mix, its just redundant and condencending.

We've had this conversation before, to a degree - and the problem with that point of view is that you might as well shut the forum down as many, many words in every day, normal conversation can be used in a negative way....

Hate
Despise

.... all have negative contexts, therefore could be deemed negative words.

The list could go on - but would there be any point in banning them?

Guys I thought I made it pretty clear we are only using these threads to discus new changes that are currently being suggested. Not all changes you want to see. The discusion in this thread is about: N.B. Factorizer signatures often display such content. As a result a decision has been made to ban them from use on the SGW forums.
