It is also frowned upon to engage in a battle with those clearly superior to you- suicide holds no honor where eyes are always open.
You rethink your actions of attacking those so clearly out of your power levels, since it will only bring scorn from the ranks of the ascended. In general, you can engage realms in between 5x your size, and 1/5th your size.
It however still allows me to attack them just fine. From the patch notes for the update I thought that size was not supposed to limit either spying or ascended attacks:
You can now only engage realms up to 5x your 'size' (planet counts), or 1/5th your size. This replaces the rank limitations, and the change is to eliminate the attack/drop ranks in order to become unattackable by the one you just attacked. Unless you remove your planets: if you can attack them, they can attack you....(excludes ascended attack, and spying...)
This is really annoying because I am still able to attack people but I cannot spy them. This has happened over several days when trying to spy several people. My planets have fluctuated between 1.5-2b, so I should be able to attack AND spy pretty much everyone in the game, though a few of the people I tried to spy were 4.3, 3.8, and 4.7b. As far as I can see this only affects spying and god quests, I'm able to attack, sab, initiate revolution, and destroy military.
