That's not true, the point isn't that they might be able to buy them cheaper, it's the fact that they can SELL them for that price and save themselves the AT's, repairs, MS parts etc used up in an unprofitable hit

Point is the bigger picture not just the individuals profit margin, selling ATs or UU at market rates usually means selling outside your alliance and thus helping others to grow. Many hits may not be profitable but have the advantage of taking away Naq and UU from competitors instead of helping them grow. Targeted and on a big enough scale non-profit farming can seriously slow down the growth of a competitor at very little cost.
