iirc, your first choice just gives you a name, a few levels in a certain stat, and a background.

With you first ascension you can more than surpass the extra 5 levels in one stat vs another, so the real difference is the name and most importantly the background. Have a mate from each race tell you what the background looks like then chose the one you like the most, or chose the name you like the most.
