Why have a Commander/Officers

Whats the benifit in having a Commander or being Commander and having Officers? Whats so special about it? Whats the difference between that and Alliances?

A Commander gives his officers a bonus to Naq income, and also can offer their protection to their officer from people farming 'em. Officers give their Commander a bonus of UU Production. So the benefit is that...
