i suppose it depends if there is an elementary particle of time
if so, then technically an anti-particle of time would exist
reacting a time particle and its anti-particle or simply exposure to the anti-partice, may prove interesting

Time travel will be Armageddon. So when we do figure it out we'll all be dead because we screwed so much up.

Re: Time Travel possible?
I don't think that time travel backwards in time is possible. If it is imagine for half a second what we would be doing just goign back. Go back 10thousand years and squish a single bug, it would screw up ALOT of things. I do think that "time traveling" foward is. By going fast enough, time apparently "slows down" for you but goes normally for everyone else thus I suppose it could be called "time travel" to the average guy wanting to know if time travel is possible

Re: Time Travel possible?
i believe time travel is possible. its theoretically possible as far as i know. i mean time travel as in the sci-fi sense. not the 'oh you are technically travelling through time as we speak' etc etc.
it may even happen within the next few years. once the LHC is switched on some seriously weird things could happen, possibly allowing people from the future to travel back to us.(possibly destroying the universe
) we could go forward aswel if we had the technology. any future civilisation would know the date we 1st turned on the LHC and would be able to take action (if an advanced civilisation exists in the future and has the means to take advantage of this chance)
so when this LHC is activated, someone from the future could come through. theres a credible theory that time travel is only possible from the point we 1st create the type of scenario such as the LHC may cause. therfore when its turned on could be year 1 for time travel. and hopefully it wont end the universe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider
i think travel between different 'dimensions' is possible in the distant future. likewise i think travel between different realities will be possible eventually. it could take a long time though lol i wont be here to see it for sure.
there are some conflicting ideas as to the effects of time travel. the killing your grandfather thing is open to many different views. some say you couldnt kill him as reality wouldnt allow it. others that the paradox would mess with things. if you killed him, you are never born, so you never kill him, so you exist and so on and on and on.
basically we wont know whether its really, truely possible until it happens. we dont even know what gravity is lol so we are seriously ignorant of how things work. once we get some more answers, then answer the questions said answers create, then answer the new questions from the new answers
we might have a clue as to whats possible. baffled? so am i

Re: Time Travel possible?
Everyone claims that it's impossible to go the speed of light....I personally don't buy it
AS OF NOW, it isn't possible. But someday in the future, it very well could become possible. Nobody can foresee what a thousand years may hold.
Now, as you approach the speed of light, time slows down. If you hit the speed of light, time stops....but what if you pass it? Would you then go back in time slowly in symmetry with time slowing down on the other end? If so, time travel would not be easy by far....perhaps impossible except in extreme instances.
If you go by this reasoning, then you would have to go 459,584,916 m/s in order to go backwards in time at the same rate at which we currently move forward.
Then, how does that shift affect the human body? Will you age backwards? If so, you will find that you cannot travel further back then the date on which you were born. Or will your cells break down as the various parts revert to something else? Causing you to melt into a puddle of flesh.
If you take that into account, it would explain why no persons have arrived from the future...as it would be impossible to do so.
Then, there would be the energy needed to attain such velocities, even with some form of inertia field to allow Faster then light travels it would require massive amounts of energy. Then you run into the problem of interstellar matter. though I doubt it'd be that difficult to avoid planets.....Can you imagine hitting a chunk of interstellar rock or dirt going 2 times the speed of light? Instant and immediate death I would think.
I am doubtful that any answer will be known in my lifetime, but outside the box thinking is critical to attaining that which you seek. Just because there are laws, doesn't mean that there aren't ways around those laws. It just means that we haven't found them yet.

Re: Time Travel possible?
i think there's something that is faster than light. information maybe. would need to actually look it up again lol which is way too much effort.
there are some odd ideas about getting [a spaceship or similar] faster than light. a specific particle comes to mind but looking it up = effort. i doubt it would be possible in the near future. even if we could accelerate to that speed, would we die of old age before reaching it? accelerate too fast and you end up with a very fast ship with human soup inside
didnt some scientists recently slow light down to walking speed. lol so faster than light travel wouldnt be too hard in that lab.
hmm as i understand it i dont think you can pass light speed as you would pass for example 1000mph. to go faster than light may require a new, exotic way of travel (*looks at stargate*)?
jus thinking of this stuff is weird. what would happen. . .would time go back? cool to consider.
i dont think a person would age backwards. thats sort of affecting the person in a too specific way. if they age backwards, they would also travel backwards, along the route they took, but then they would no longer be going faster than light, then they start going forward again. id not advise you try this dude you may end up in an eternal loop
but i dont think this would happen.
the fact that no time traveller has been discovered does suggest its not possible in a way you're right. but theres probably many other ways to think of this. always is
attaining light speed in the traditional sense may prove impossible. it could be like a long piece of rope hung loosley between two posts. the more you tighten it, the more level it becomes but to level it more requires excessive energy. it never becomes exactly level.
so as you came closer to light speed the energy required would grow hugely. another example is achieving absolute zero. the closer they get, the harder it becomes.
if in the future they can build the ship and get to that speed id imagine a piece of rock wouldnt be a problem. there are already 'shields' under development that would repel particles etc. jus gotta put the shield on steroids for the big rocks aye.
yeh man thats very true
the reversal of the ageing process will probably be reality within 50years. if its not ill owe you a beer.

you are forgetting to mention that as well as time dilation
an objects mass changes at speeds greater than 0.1c
at the speed of light an object would be infinitely massive
therefore it would possess both an infinite gravitational field strenght and would require an infinitely huge force in order to accelerate
as such a force does not exist (to our knowledge) further acceleration is impossible

aye. normal acceleration past lightspeed isnt possible (that we know of . . .yet) but other less conventional ways might be. *looks at stargate*

Re: Time Travel possible?
ah but a stargate utilises a wormhole and does not involve travelling through our three dimensions
it can't really have a speed can it?
