Memorial Forum

Can I suggest that we create a Memorial Forum, to house all the threads of our fallen SGW's players? We have had quite a few players pass away within the last year.

So far these threads have just sat in general until they fall to the bottom of the first page, and are then forgotten.

I think they deserve their own forum, their own resting place where they will always be highlighted and remembered.

This would also make it easier to see these threads when they come about. We would know where to look straight away, and not have to search through the general section to find out what's happened by sheer accident.

we've got to be the devils advocate or something like that now...

is not this forum already far too cluttered with multiple subforums?
are all threads by the deceased all that interesting to look at?
would they be relevant outside their current sections?
how would one prove that a person is deceased and not just gone from the community?
etc...


also, might it not be better to just have a thread in the announcements section where each of the deceased are mentioned with example post that shows that person's style of posting?

Have to agree with Zeratul somewhat and play the devil's advocate role. Although it is tragic that some of our community may pass away before their time - do we need to turn part of a gaming forum into a memorial? In, short - I don't believe we do - sorry if that seems blunt and harsh, but it's true, and there's no easy way to say it. We do not need a memorial section that highlight and draws attention to any memorial threads, nor does it happen regularly enough to warrant it's own board - and as Zera points out, the forum is already cluttered to a degree.

It is sufficient to do as we do now, with a single memorial thread if and when someone finds out about a death.

Nuto said that these threads fall off the bottom of general and are forgotten; to be blunt, again, life moves on and that is what happens - we do not need to be creating memorial shrines.

I like either idea, be it a sub-forum or a thread. Most of all I like the idea itself; us humans build monuments to our fallen, we like to remember and to be remembered.

If it was to be posted in the announcements section then a mod or admin would have to post it. In some cases a close friend may be the one that would want to post it not give it to someone else to do.

We are a community, and just like RL communities some people like to go to places to remember lost friends, i.e. graveyard, place of scattered ashes, or a favourite place.

If people from this community were to do this as it is now then they would need to go in to General section and look through the pages, or do a search. I'm not saying that people will always keep going back to the thread to remember the person, but we all handle grieve and rememberance in our own personal ways.

I put my full support behind a section, whether a proper section or a sub forum, whatever, for these types of posts to be placed. Afterall we are a community.

And who would purposely lie about themselves or someone else being deceased?

It's nice to see so many people care about each other here. And it's also nice to know that people are around to be able to pass on sad news like this. Hell if I was hit by a bus tomorrow then no-one in SGW at all would know that I was dead because none of my RL friends play this game anymore.... I would suddenly just vanish.

I think a Memorial Thread, holds much more water in this community then does a "this and that" forum, or one purely dedicated to spam.

I don't think it's that much trouble to create a place for all the "RIP" threads to go. It's almost sick that they have to live amongst the flaming and childish antics that general is now slumped with.

There is a RIP thread in general right now thats getting shoved aside for a silly online war game thread? You really need to put life into perspective if you think that those threads belong in the same forum together.

Wolf, no idea what your problem is with respecting the dead who loved and cherishedthis game, but I personally think that they at least deserve a special part of this forum which doesn't link in with flaming and the high level of immaturity displayed in most other places.

It's not difficult to make another forum, nor would anyone even need to mod it.

I tend to think that life goes on also, but I still miss, love and think about everyone I have ever lost in my life. I still mourn. I still cry for them. I still visit graves of my lost friends and family. Why should we have to forget these players. Some of which were like family to other players.

I am shocked to even see anyone disagreeing with this idea.

Makes you wonder what the world is coming to when you can just disconnect from the sadness and tragedy of death like that.

Show some respect please.

as I pointed out previously, there are a lot of forums that can be got rid of because they are there purely for luxury, rather then necessity.

I wouldnt say a memorial forum is either necessity, or luxury, it is just respectful from most peoples points of views.

I, however, support it because I dont really care about the minutia of other peoples non existent lives, and would rather have them somewhere else where it is easier for me to ignore them, rather then cluttering the general section. Call me anything, but its the truth.

I think you've misinterpreted what I was suggesting.

I don't want every deceased players posts all put on one section. I just want the thread, announcing their departure from this world to be put in a separate section. A Memorial Forum where friends can go to post, where you can pay your respects.

It has nothing to do with the deceased players style of typing, or collecting their posts...

My suggestion is far more simple than that.
