Another dumb question, seeing as I should know this but... what are the benefits and downsides of being in an alliance, aside from the obvious fact of protection? I played a game with 'factions', but I think it is very different.

Not all wars are pointless, and neither are they all sensible.

Benefits:
Protection, someone is less likely to attack you if your in an active alliance.
Advise, someone is there to give you advice.
Friends, with a common goal you make friends.
Downsides:
Wars, when another alliance declares war on your alliance you go to war weither you want to or not.
Your easier to find (just look for them in the alliance)
Those are just some of them.
