Re: Obama wins

what i find interesting is the amount of news coverage in the UK dedicated to the US presidential elections, compared to the elections of other world leaders (pretty much any of the other G8 countries). It'd be interesting to see the statistics of US airtime that the British general elections get, next to none would be my guess.

Do you even know what socialist means?

As Auriel said, the UK isn't. Spain isn't. Italy isn't. Germany and Sweden are probably two of the countries in the EU where socialism is more prevalent, but even they don't qualify under the traditional definition. Nowhere in Europe has been properly socialist since the nineties, and even that's debatable.

great. so in these countries there's no public education, no public health system, no unemployement benefits and other form of social welfare payements, no social housing, no affordable/subsidised housing schemes... good. then i'm packing my bags and moving over.

I don't see what's wrong with those...homeless people can be dangerous. If there's no affordable houses, people with current economy situation will become homeless, and insecurity will grow, people being stolen on the streets way much than before, attempts of overtaking governement and administration by revolutioners being supported by extreme left parties.
Want the rise of some obscure neo-leninist revolution? Make sure there's *no* help for houses with current situation. And you'll get it.
A decent right wing party knows when there are things to do, that aren't usually following their program, when it's needed, for the goodness of the country.

so tell me.. how the hell lack of affordable housing schemes would lead to homelessness?

a hint: broaden your horizons a bit.. think outside of what you see..

What happens in USA perhaps?

Re: Obama wins

I don't really think the beginnings of a welfare state are indicative of socialism, which lies much further to the left. Britain and France may be going that way, but their overall politics still lies slightly left of centre.

France isn't socialist...the governement is right wing, the majority in parliament is right wing.

Next time you do that, you'll get a warning, mr. supermod.

Anyway.. I will not put on my teachers cap. I do this sometimes.. but not today.
I'll just say that, for most of you, "ignorant" is indeed a rather accurate term.
Don't be insulted. It's like that all across the world.

See.. Now that, dear friends, is an ignorant remark.

Moving on.. the formerly so solid allies of the USA needed a way to bond with the USA again, some friendly propaganda, so to speak. Many were breaking away, or finding other friends, friends they thought would give more attention to their interests. By using the Presidential elections as a semi-global campaign of spreading American values and imprinting the love for a new American President in the hearts of all those gullible allies of yours, the USA have effectively done what they wanted; people in the allied nations now feel as though "their candidate" became/will become President of the USA. They get hope for the future, and trust America's leadership once more.

It's a dirty trick, but all weak minds fall for it. You can try it yourself, but I would suggest using your dog as a subject so as not to be disappointed by your lack of results. ;)

Anyway, talk on the streets here in The Netherlands has been for a few months now the fact that Obama would become president. And how good that would be for us. 'tis a load of horsedung.

Re: Obama wins

I'm infront of a wall of bricks..."weak minds" etc that is now..pffft. What else?
Enjoy debating with yourself and your own arrogance. Since others are weak minded, ignorant and all, and are enable to see the oh so obvious scheme of things.
Believe what you said if you want, but don't think I'll follow that speech. I'm not an empty mind (or weak mind, in context?) unable to think for himself who gets fed by others, afterall! :)

Perhaps that's because the world truly does revolve around the U.S.? :P

Hey you said it, not me.

yet in reality, all the worlds stock markets are pretty heavily reliant on each other, so the world doesn't resolve around any one country (regardless of who it is)

I disagree.

I would say that 70% of the worlds stock markets can be influenced instantly by the us market.

Remember, GM is everywhere as is ford. GM falls... the worlds markets stumble quite a bit.

Japans markets are heavily influenced by the defense provided by the american military, if we
removed said bases and japan had to build a military instead of just a def force...their economy would shift, and affect their market.

If the USA stopped buying from china....china's growth bubble would collapse.

For those in the UK....walmart = asda , Jaguar is owned by ford, as is aston martin (though that might be gm)

The reason everyone in the world is interested in the USA at the moment of our election, is because they KNOW it will affect them.

Where is the UN head quartered? hmmmmm oh yeah! New York.

btw.. The UK had an election? I thought brown just took over :P

j/k, I read CNN international so i knew of it :P But yeah, we just plainly do not care. Whomever becomes PM of England, will go with us.

We have what, 4-5 US military bases in England. I spent 2 years at one of em. The british RAF commander, had an office down the hall by the stairs...the base though, was ran by an USAF Col.

Sorry to throw up an older post by THAT quote is the biggest crock I've read in my LIFE!

If you honesty believe that comment to be true then you've never actually asked anyone outside of the USA about Bush. I can't name 1 person out of the US who likes Bush. Your recent election proved you wrong too. With 65,319,143 people voting for Obama and 57,349,323 voting for McCain. In order to understand just how much hatred people globally have for Bush, you need to leave the country and ask some people. I was in Rome last year when there was a massive riot because the guy had touched down in their city. Perhaps your comment was aimed at Americans, but as I said, you were proved wrong because your country voted for change, and why would you vote for someone you hate when the alternative is someone similar to Bush?

http://edition.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/president/

Moving on though...

There was much rejoicing when we all found out Obama won the election. Much deserved rejoicing.

Also, on a different note, he has a really lovely smile that doesn't make him look like he's plotting something evil... And he has great teeth!

It's not a matter of luck; it's just a matter of time.

Re: Obama wins

I have noticed the ignorance/ignorant words have been a little bit too freely used on this topic.
I would like to add that:
Saying to a person who is ignorant towards something, not related to your opinion regarding that thing, is actually indeed ignorant. (eg: Saying that Germany didn't have *any* influence on Austria-Hungary's decision to take action against Serbia on 28th july with ultimatum given on 25th july, a month after archiduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination)
However, saying that a person is ignorant, because that person doesn't seem to follow same ideas as you, while it's not about an [almost] proven fact (best eg: saying that Obama is a good president choice, and was best choice democrats could do; being considered as ignorance), is an "insult".
It's like saying, someone who pretends BMW is better than Audi (I don't mean BMW serie 1 compared to Audi S6, but the brands themselves), is an ignorant. It's just taking your own opinion as true facts, and others' as false facts (so called "weak minds" of europe).
We can then make another difference: the person who talks to McCain in the video, is an ignorant, because it belongs to the first kind of ignorance, totally untrue facts.
Another example: saying McCain is fascist, Obama communist, is also first kind of ignorace, because it's quite far from reality. However, saying Clinton is more left than Obama, or the opposite, if considered as ignorance, would belong without a doubt to second category of ignorance, (in other words, not ignorance, but just disagreement).
I don't think I've to develop more about that. :-)
