It is not confusing.

The figure before the brackets are your miners and lifers added together.

The figure you have in the brackets = Lifers only.

Take that figure away from the figure before the brackets and that = miners only

When you lifer suicide it takes away from the lifers, i.e. the figure in the brackets.

Because the number before the brackets is your miners and lifers added together that figure would also drop because some of your lifers will have committed suicide.
