To 'help' people. The 'sole purpose' is not just to make money, but suite your clients/consumers with the items they want.
However, in this capitalist society it is easy to loose site of that main goal. A business should help the community, providing jobs, capital injections, and making a good social outlook on the area.
If a corporation is making money then it's clearly giving customers and clients what they want. A business' only purpose is to make money, if providing more jobs, capital injections and good social outlook help them make more then they will do it. People can be nice and generous, companies should not.

i never said they shouldn't make money, but the amounts of money these company's make is so excessive and provide very little that is of benefit to either their customers or the community's.
Like I said, they clearly provide something because they're making so much money. Their customers like it enough that they buy it, and there is probably enough traffic and employment that the community is doing well. Making a sustainable profit for the forseeable future is a companies first and only goal, how to do it through whatever means they decide to is up to them.
