most people just use a black border a couple of pixels wide.
here i made the border differently

Not hard to make a border. There different borders, easiest one is a 1px Black border which works for most sigs. Just remeber to make a new layer and make sure crtl and a and sometimes you can change the blending of the layer as well.

Maybe try A few gradient maps at different blendings and Opaticy for a varity of colours.

sometimes i like to do a white and black border... so you can see it in a dark forum or light forum skin...

Use the rectangle marquee tool then right click and go to stroke should do it for ya

Borders are a good idea, but don't get horny with them. Alot of sigs look better without a border, especially larger ones. Test and see if it looks better with a border before going with it.

definitely agreed here, i used to do larger borders on some of my works and i tended to go a bit overboard.

just play around with different ideas for a bit, find what you think looks best, but remember from sig to sig it is never a one size fits all sort of thing.
