Isn't it possible to make up a forum shoutbox/direct chat? I've seen this on several forums (not always a service for money), and I think it would be a good addition to revive those forums, which (sadly) are getting a bit inactive compared to a year and half ago. YES, there's sgw irc, but well most of people who use it are either not playing/visiting forums anymore or are just logged in and not talking. They are totally unrelated to those forums (regular irc users said themselves they don't give a damn about sgw and its forums!)
What's everyone opinion on this, and admins' answer? (possible, not possible, might be possible?)

On the forums I've seen it on, I love it, but it lags page loading badly
Going to kill dialup uses, unless you have the preference to turn it off.

Good point, would help people not having connection quick enough to use forums as usually, while others could enjoy chat.

Re: Forum shoutbox
interesting idea, but how were those other forums activity-wise in posting?

"Great holy armies shall be gathered and trained to fight all who embrace evil. In the name of the gods, Browsers shall be changed to carry the internet out amongst the peoples and we will spread Firefox to all the unbelievers. The power of the Firefox will be felt far and wide and the wicked users of IE shall be converted to use the true browsers."

Omega have one, and ours is frequently used. Having said that, I have heard people complain about how much it adds to loading times.

I agree. There is a little initial lag due to the chatbox on the DDE forum. Imagine what would be on this forum with thousands of users and possible hundreds at a time.

Re: Forum shoutbox
Another place for arguing? IMO there would just be alliances fighting each other, or enemies fighting each other in it, instead of people nicely chatting... IRC or MSN imo is a better choice but not everyone has that or everyone else's MSN. So with the option to turn it off, it would still be nice.

Was my concern as well. How is it policed? Word filter and such? is there some way to remove it from those who abuse it? such as that.

Re: Forum shoutbox
we're not sure about the word filter part, but enforcing rules can be done by people with the rights to do so... at least on the type of shoutbox used on the chaos server...
we're uncertain whether there is possibility of having more than two levels of access to it (i.e. user-mod-admin instead of just user-admin)
admins on shoutbox can edit entries and ban users and (we think) delete entries...

It can be set with diff. type of access for users and you can make groups with access to it. If someone breakes the rules or spams it, you can remove them from the chatbox group. It is very very hard to police though. And I repeat, it adds huge lag on loading if there are many posts and users.

lol..
you so got that inspiration from Nemesis forums jim.. lmao..
I can say it's a splendid idea on the smaller forums, but I reckon it may be somewhat abused on here. See what everyone else thinks though...
