I think to get movies or something I think there was a site like gamtrailers or something like that, Normally I'd just grab a gif I want and just add it slide by slide. Long to do but meh.

Most of the video-animated sigs I've made so far contain extracted frame images from video clips I've found all over the place. Just a word of warning, if you are going to make a video-animated sig, be prepared for a very time-consuming job creating it. Over time however, you'll learn more about what you're doing and hopefully speed up the process in the future.

Some use actual images as a base for their backgrounds, then play around with them to change it to the point of making it look... "cool". The point is for you to experiment with different things. Go simple first. Make it large if you have to (but if you are going to post it, spoiler the image please), do anything you want and need to do in order to make something you genuinely like. Take my first sig for example:

A simple 500x200 sig that I created for my forum account for SGW: BattleCorp. As you can see, only actual image was of Master Chief in the middle, while the rest was taken up with Halo-font text. The background was a simple orange colour fill with a streak of yellow in the middle. Only one special effect (courtesy of Photoshop Elements ) was used, and that was a nice little effect which made the background seem wavy and reflective-like.

My current avatar was almost exactly the same thing, but this time only with my name.

In all seriousness though, if you have the tools, whether it be Fireworks, Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, or some other graphic editing program, experiment with images, renders, special effects, fading, anything to help you learn how to get from the sig you see above, to something like this...

Heres an example of color blending a background to match your render. (which isn't ALWAYS complimentary, but can be a start)

For the background, i made several copies of the spiderman render, then spread them out through the work area. I merged them and used some blur filters and some custom brushes with the Blur and smudge tool.

This gets you a background with colors matching the render. This isn't always the effect you want to achieve, but is an option.
