Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?

The similarities between the two 'cults' are striking; each consisting of several series, several movies, several resurrections (of the 'brand').

What say you? Will the 'Gaters' outnumber the 'Trekkies' in time? :)
Or will the timeless Star Trek continue to hold so many in its grasp.

Let me know!

Given time I would say yes, cuz I just don't see Star Trek going any further, besides the odd movie here and there, and Stargate has SG-U coming and hopefuly more movies as well.

Btw I'm a prtty big fan of both Star Trek, and Stargate, so what would the make me?

GATE GATE GATE GATE GATE GATE GATE GATE GATE GATE GATE GATE.
i cant say anything on how StarGate will do versus Star Trek, however based on personal opinion, Star Trek has lasted the age(s) and brought with it avid fans from all-over, i dont think StarGate is capable of doing the same.... i mean in hollywood and all you always hear of the people cosplaying and learning the languages of the Elvish, Clingon, or some other language/costume combination. very rarely if at all do i hear of anything Go'auld (sp?), Ancient, or anything SG based.

i have to say tho, it should be the other way around. it isnt as easy to make fun of StarGate compared to Star Trek, quality isnt as bad, and most of what ive seen, things arent entirely predictable.

i mean look at Star Trek and their constant use of the 'Red Shirt' character. 4 characters go to the planet, 3 of which are regular cast members, guess who doesnt come back? bleh. also BRIGHT COLORED SUITS. kind of gets old. i guess the same kind of thing can be said about SG1, you know they'll make it back to earth, the idiot polititian threatening SGC will fail, but it isnt anywhere near as cheesy.
Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?

Ah.. well... I think in time it is a certain possibility. Star Trek is very bland and not really exciting as a whole. I mean I found Charmed exciting (and let's face it, no TV series does cheesy and predictability more than Charmed).. but always struggled with Star Trek...and that's why it has died and why it won't last in future generations.

However, the Trek's contribution to sci-fi and it's endurance up until several years ago, cannot be entirely ignored. It has done exceptionally well!

These films will may be their only way out though. Give it ten+ years without them.. and the Trek would have been nothing but a sunday afternoon bore sesh on channel five, just some rusty monument to a failed franchise - if that.
Star Wars pwns both and all other takers.. XD I recently re-watched the original version of the original film.. and I am still recovering from just how amazing it is. Original story line, great characters and a fantastic universe of information.
Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?

Star Trek has had an amazing staying power for saying what it really is - a bunch of mediocre, mildy-entertaining tv series and movies. However, its fan base is much stronger than Stargate, and it has a lot larger recognition amongst non-fans - stargate will never achieve that. You only have to look at the most recent SG films - straight-to-DVD, essentially long episodes. The latest Star Trek film? Topping the box office.

I think this speaks for itself:

USA Weekend Box-Office Summary
week of 8 May 2009
Rank Title Weekend Gross
1 Star Trek (2009) $75.2M $79.2M
2 X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) $26.4M $129M
3 Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) $10.3M $30.1M

Stargate may have the longest running series, but it is a small fish compared to the Trekkies ;)

Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?

Well personally, I never watched the Stargate series or Star Trek (I was brought to this game by my cousin and kinda got hooked :D ) so from a complete outsiders view I'd say Star Trek has had more staying power and has been immensly more popular.

Star Wars is another piece of amamamazing-ness altogether, Semps the only downside is we worship a "space opera" :-D But who cares Star Wars pwns all
