Just because some people don't read books doesn't mean Star Wars is dead.

Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?
Only time will tell. Star Trek has been out for decades and has numerous tv show and movies. But Stargate has only been on tv for 1/4 of that time. But I think that SGU will be the end of the series. I mean how many times can a group of humans stumble across Ancient technology. But if you look at both series they are so similar.
Star Trek and TNG/Sg-1 both explore the galaxy and meet new races. Some good some bad.
DS9/Atlantis-both set up home in Alien structure. Terok Nor and Atlantis
Voyager/SGU both try to get home after being stranded far from home. Only returning after series is ending.
Who knows the 4 the Stargate series might be about the Ancients or perhaps the Asgard when they were more human like.
But lets see how many people care about Stargate 40 years from now. But Star Trek is now dead they have a cartoon which is kinda good.

And a film which probably took more money in its first weekend than the entire SG franchise.

Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?
I have never seen a full episode of Star Trek.... when i was 4-5 my father was watching it... but what could i have understood then? My only question was how could that blind guy see through that metal thing... i can`t explain that even today.
About SG-1... i`ve seen all the episodes some were very entertaining and some were extremely boring.
Personally I don`t think that Stargate is that successfull as Star Trek was.... simply because it apeared in a period when the people weren`t that interested in Sci-Fi... i don`t remember any space missions that could have cought the attention of the media and thus to start people`s interest while Star Trek apeared in a period after the 60-70s space missions, there was that race with Soviet Union to be the first in space, the first on the moon, etc. Even though the intrigues are more complex in Stargate and the actions take place in several places in the universe and on the Earth which is amaizing (unlike most of the episodes from Star Trek who`s action take place in the ship) all the seasons seemed to be repeating themselves, with different enemies. The people weren`t so found of that a parasitic alien smaller than the human brain was more intelligent and bent on conquest to slay the entire galaxy.
The same story is available for Star Wars. It was successfull because it apeared in a period when everyone had their attention and imagination caught up by the NASAs space missions.

Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?
My answer would be: It's an unfair question to ask...
I am an avid fan of Stargate, Star Trek, and Star wars...and could never choose one over the other...
The way I see it, they lend themselves well to different forms of media.
Star Trek, the first of the three in chronological order, has a fairly set universe, so it doesn't lend itself well to books (which isn't to say there aren't good ones out there)...but it is chock full of drama if you know where to look. With the likelihood of another series pretty much dead, and the games never really working out well...you realise that Star Trek really gets going in the Movies. It's true that some of them are not as good as they could be, but on average a Star Trek movie will do at least decently in the box office. The latest of them being the perfect example.
In the end, the Star Trek story must be told to us, rather than us telling the story. So we will probably always see new interpretations of it in movie form...even after the shows, games, and books have been long forgotten.
Star Wars, though it started with movies, lends itself more to it's fans. The universe is large, and very complex...and not at all explored, beyond the primary plotline. As a result it has been a popular game title for some time...but where it really shines is in it's "extended universe", created by the fans. Another Star Wars movie would flop...any series would have to follow a predictible and ultimately boring premise...but you can write books and games in that universe all your life and never run out of material to work with. When the movies are lost, and the games boring and repetitive...there will still be books churned out every day telling new and exciting stories.
Stargate, to me, seems to function as an inbetween for the first two...it does not lend itself well to movies, because big studios tend to be unwilling to front large budgets for movies based on a series. And much as it is with ST, the SG universe is fairly set...you can't really play with the story too much without violating the main plot. So an "extended universe" is never going to be popular...but Stargate does have a very agressive story...and the heros appeal the the fans. In the age of video games this translates very well. It is likely that SG will have a long future in video games, possibly starting with SG-Worlds. Even assuming we get bored playing cowboy and indian with the Tau'ri and the Goa'uld, you still have milennia of conflict with the Ancients, Ori, Wraith, and who knows what else to play with. The stories may never be compelling, but it will always be a good firefight...
So in movies...Stargate will never be as sucessfull as Star Trek...
In Books...no one can compete with Star Wars
And in gaming...it may be that Stargate will destroy the competition...
To each their own...
And to make my point...we are all sitting here in a forum for a game dedicated to Stargate...discussing the Star Wars universe, and the Star Trek movie...

Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?
Im going to go with NO. And im baseing the Success on the following, Brands.
Take a look at Stargate Sg1, The Mainstay of the stargate series, 10 Seasons, 2 Movies (3?) . It had for 6 odd season, the ongoing storeyline which was very very good, the Gouald, knowing this couldnt go on forever, newer enemies and decent storeylines emerged... Up until around season 9, the writeing was amazeing, and the storeylines where as well. Dont get me wrong, it was still good 9/10, but not the class act it was before that.
The other brand within it, was Atlantis. Which in its own right, was very successful, 5 seasons (Babylon 5, incredibly successfull, only had 6...) and its own movie is being made, i believe.
However, when you look at star trek and stargate, i have to say, do you think in, 20 years time, they will make a new stargate series? I cant in all honesty, say yes. Whereas if we look at Star Trek....well...
TOS - Season 3, Massive budget films, 6 (I think.. or 7..working off memory here) .
Then...
Star Trek, TNG , Seasons, 7, Films (again big budget) 4 .
Then
Star Trek DS9 , Seasons 5 (Dunno if they did films... dont think they did)
Then...
Voyager Seasons 7 (Made a few cruddy low budget films as i recall)
Now..
OMG TOS REMAKE FILM!!! (Insanely huge budget) .
Really, I think it was a matter of faith, Cast, And budgets.
Star trek basically keeps all its main cast members for all its shows for all its seasons (Baring the odd exception, but never anyone "Main" Eg Picard, riker etc...) Whereas stargate Lost Don S Davis , AND then RDA a year later. Bridges and Browder are FINE actors, And they're characters where OK, But looseing them 2, is like, Looseing Riker and Picard from Next Gen...
...Now, Cast lost aside, Not only this, but in the end, both series suffered from Lack of faith from producers (NOT from fans and crew however...) And thats what stopped stargate in its tracks. There is no doubting its massive, but star trek just had THAT backing, it was one of the first of its kind. As was stargate, but i cant see any way stargate could possibly ever contend with Star trek, Unless it has a couple more spin offs (which is not possible) that are at least better than average, and it would need a couple of MASSIVE films, which not enough people would go see at the movies. Films like First Contact, Wrath of Kahn etc, They still are, and where, HUGE successes, stargate films are released onto DVD.
There is no doubting the fan bases of both are huge, but star trek simply wins hands down , they will still be makeing films, and maybe even series of star trek in 20 years time, stargate will just be a memory then

Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?
I would love to see the SG franchise produce another "proper" movie...
I'd put it along the lines of a canon (by which I mean none of this time travel malarky) war movie...doesn't have to focus on sg-1, there's plenty of marines going through the gate...
The standard "doomsday plot fails because of brilliant work by one or two people" isn't what I'm going for either...I'm talking a good, old fashioned, storm the beaches war movie...
*sigh*
A man can only dream...

Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?
I would have to say that the two series have very little in common aside from the obvious. The thing that I think brought star trek its appeal was the fact that it was set in a future where most of humanities uglier characteristics were bred out. That was the whole Gene Roddenberry thing.
Star gate on the other hand is more about how humans of today face some of the same problems, Galactic conquest, slavery, and living in a universe that dosen't share your core values. Now don't get me wrong I have watched every episode of every series mentioned numerous times. Star Trek always seemed to be the more idealistic of the two even the dark DS9.
When you get right down to it Star trek is still around because the people at paramount know how to force things down your throat. I don't know where Stargate universe is going to go or how it will get there . You cant really compare the two shows They reflect different views and attitudes of the people that watched them and the times that they lived in.

Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?
I would have to say Star Trek is more successful. Easily. Only adding to it is the newest movie that came out this year, which was a HUGE success.
Which do I LIKE better? I like Stargate more personally I think, overall. Stargate Universe isn't that great at all really, but I think I enjoyed Stargate SG1 and the prime of Stargate Atlantis more than any other Star Trek series.
( yay for Necromancy >_> )

Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?
Commercially Gate will never match Trek
Personally I would rate them
TV Series
1) SG1 - Excelent upto series 8, series 9 & 10 went seriously downhill
2) DS9 - Great action with the Dominion War, but lots of poor episodes too
3) Atlantis - Good for the most part, bit to cheesy, never going to match SG1
4) Enterprise - We all wanted Tpol to get down and dirty, nice retro ship but script and stories not very good
5) TOS - loved it as a kid, now I cant think why, very dated
6) Voyager - Cpt Hepburn wannabe makes me sick, only good stuff was 7of9 being hot as hell and the few Borg related episodes
7) TNG - Baldy quoting shakespear with a psychobabbleogogist on the the bridge, all way to nice and superior, only good bits were the rare occations when Riker blew stuff up
8 ) SGU - So poor so far that I rate it bottom of the pile
Movies
ST1 - Very poor
ST2 - I think thats the Khan one, not bad
ST3 - Dont remember
ST4 - The one on earth modern day. very poor
ST5 - Blowing up god, hell why not, but still poor
ST6 - Dont remember
ST7 - TNG with borg, not to bad
ST8 - More moral high ground tat
ST9 - Even more moral high ground tat
Prequel - Not bad, lots of action
StarGate - overhyped as special effects that never seemed very special, not impressed
SG Continuum - Very disappointing
SG Ark of Trust - Pretty good as feature length episode, not a movie
Basically SG1 TV Series rocks, the rest is second rate in comparison, and none of the films are anything special.
After SG1 your better off watching B5, Sarah Connor, Firefly, Dr Who, etc. Spinoffs will never live up to expectations IMO

Re: Is Stargate as successful as Star Trek?
First, a little correction to mezz's post about the ST movies:
ST1 The Motion Picture - bad movie, didn't make a lot of sense
ST2 The Wrath Of Khan - great movie, the fight in the nebula was good stuff
ST3 The Search for Spock - also good, not as good as ST2
ST4 The Voyage Home - it was different from any trek that came before, pretty good
ST5 The Final Frontier - WHT was that? Never made sense at all. Worst trek movie ever
ST6 The Undiscovered Country - Pretty good actually, except the weird shapeshifting alien. Shapeshifters are supposed to be bad ass like the founders (DS9)
ST7 Generations - Got this one wrong Mezz, it was the one with Kirk and Picard, great movie, really good stuff
ST8 First Contact - Best trek movie of all time, the borg and stuff
ST9 Insurrection - Pretty bad, its like they didn't even want to try and match 8
ST10 Nemesis - total rip off of ST2, never made all that much sense either. Only Brent Spiner's acting saved it from being below ST5
New ST movie - really? That was a star trek movie? It was like Star Wars in the trek universe. The characters were a bunch of kids with no class, had nothing star trekky about the whole thing. So bad in fact its not even considered proper star trek canon (sorry leonard nimoy, not even you could save this one)
Anyway, that was all
