Personally...I would love to finally have a health care program...I've had to get by on the generosity of doctors and local health care institutions for years now (which I do appreciate), because the various private "options" that I've had are either too expensive...or don't actually provide anything of use, for example one company I worked for had a program that advertised comprehensive eye care...but when I read the fine print, they don't offer any help purchasing glasses, or contacts and only discounted doctors fees by a tiny percentage(something like 5%)...

However, I am also very uneasy about any government funded program...I lived in California and for a time had MediCal, a state funded health care program...while it was nice to know they cared, it actually achieves very little because the funding ran out...that and they don't exactly get the best deals...I personally paid over $500 USD a month for Lithium Carbonate...one of the easiest and cheapest medicines to produce...Someone I knew paid almost twice that much for a medicine that prevented heart failure...and frequently...we both would be on waiting lists because they couldn't afford to help everyone who needed it...

There is an even worse issue...if it's not considered "life threatening", you're likely not going to get help...The only reason I got what I needed was because I was WELL below poverty level...I knew many people, who had serious mental conditions...who recieved no help, because it was not "life threatening"...

So here I am...unsure of Pres. Obama's plan...I really, really like the idea of health care...but I am unwilling to trust that the government can successfully implement it, or that they are even willing to provide coverage for things they don't deem to be "life threatening."

All told...I can't say whether I support the plan or not...because I don't know if I do...

Re: Obama's Health Care Plan

If there is any risk what so ever of it ever turning into anything resembling the NHS, all americans should resist with their very life blood.

The NHS is by the most bloated, useless and retarded organisation in existance today. The doctors are so far above prosecution and as such as so unbelievabley arrogant you wouldnt have any idea.

They with hold treatment, they do constant xrays and other scans under the guise of 'investigating' any problem you have. This of course prevents them from giving any treatment, and their investigations can take years (read: 10+) while the problem gets progressively worse and yet they still do nothing at all.

Resist at all costs, or your lives will be ruined

and btw, i'm british and have to rely on the nhs as i cant afford private treatment in this country. mores the pity

Re: Obama's Health Care Plan

Right...

As far as i can tell, america does have a state funded public health service, but it is very basic... these free clinics are overworked and understaffed, but they show there is definatly a need for some sort of healthcare, help.

That being said, this is a bad time economically and a state funded healthcare system would cost a helluva lot of money. That money is clearly, as far as i can tell, not avaliable to the obama government, at least not currently.

Theres good and bad points to a free public healthcare system, but dont be fooled by the rumour mongering of the press. The NHS, as prime example, is poorly managed at ground and senior level. With proper management in place it would be much more efficiant. That being said, it still is very very good. I know this because my sister has downsyndrome, she is now 28 and for the past 28 years, the NHS has looked after her, made sure she has been fit and healthy, and no, they didnt want to send her away to die as soon as she was born, as i have read is apparently the case in certain americano press releases #-o . Not only this, but the quality of the doctors provided, as well as the aftercare, helped save my dads life on 2 occasions. Point in fact 3, Steven Hawking, That british physics guy, attributes his life to the NHS.

Something like this really needed to be implemented 100 years ago to work in the US however, trying to do it now will im quite sure, end in failure, its too big a task. The only way it would work is if 95 percent of americans stand up, say, yeah we want this, we are willing to pay an extra few dollars a year to make it work, but that wouldnt happen. I can see them definatly trying to implement it, and i can see it "getting off the ground" but i cant see it lasting long at all.

Obamas new slogan should be "Obama - Turns out we cant"

I'm not against the system, and I'm Pro-NHS, but I honestly don't think that public healthcare would work in America. It's the wrong kind of country.

you actually support a system that makes doctors unaccountable to the point where they can ruin a persons a life and suffer no consequences for doing so.

the nhs is bloated, arrogant and unfit for purpose and should be dismantled. The US was right to not use such a system before and hopefully will not use one in the future

Re: Obama's Health Care Plan

if public health care works in any country it is a miracle since the probability of making comunism successful is extremely low.
