"A Soldier is a Yahoo hired to kill in cold blood as many of his own species, who have never offended him, as possibly he can."

EDIT: The quote is not of my own hand. It is from part IV of Swift's original Gulliver's Travels.

Re: Soldiers
Because, if you kill someone who's actually offended you, you go to jail.
Being in the military - it's just business with the guise of patriotic duty. Heck, it creates jobs. So would paying people to commit suicide, mind you. Heck, that would be one way to cut down unemployment!!!

It would go to their relations or friends.
"Il give your familly $1million if you kill yourself".
Or
"I will give you $1mill if you kill yourself in two years time"
you have 2 years do waste 2mill lol.
anywho...
I agree with the quote given, except the Yahoo bit. Soldiers can often be very intelligent and highly trained and skilled fighters.
Finally:
Yahoo is a funny word.

It is indeed a funny word. The term Yahoo actually comes from the story itself. Gulliver is explaining to a Houynhnhm (extremely rational horse-like creature) why and how Europeans fight wars with their neighbours. In Houynhnhm-land, Yahoos are savage, human-like creatures that are odiously disgusting. Besides Yahoos, Gulliver is the only human-like creature the Houynhnhms have ever seen; and they marvel at his capacity for reason and language.
So, in this context, the term 'Yahoo' simply means 'human'.

i see!
would it not derive further than that back to the simple shout often made of "YAHOOO!!!!"
May Swift have not got the idea for the name of these human like creatures from this primal shout?

When you answered that silly query concerning how money could benefit a man who's been paid to die.

If this is the case, how would you term it if he were alive at the same time as his children and grandchildren? Are you confusing the man with the family? Is the family the self with which one ought to identify when referring to suicide (self-killing). Or maybe you got confused with the following words:
Killing oneself : suicide
Killing one's father : patricide
Killing one's mother : matricide
Killing one's parent(s) : parenticide
Killing one's brother : fratricide
Killing one's sister : sororicide
Killing one's husband : mariticide, viricide
Killing one's wife : uxoricide
Killing one's son or daughter : filicide, prolicide
Killing a close relative : parricide
They're two different things, methinks.

Re: Soldiers
The self is contained in the genetic material. The possibility of genetic reincarnation remains for as long as you procreate. *grin*
Me, particularly gloomy.. but answering your question. wrote:The child is the father, the child is the mother.

Re: Soldiers
I knew I could be my own grandmother!!!
Still, your conclusion rests upon the premise that the extent of the concept of the self is contained within the genetic material, whereas I may believe something different and by virtue of the fact that both beliefs are essentially possibilities, neither being absolute, each belief is justified by virtue of the fact that they are believed.
Then again, my own belief does not contradict the statement that the father is the child. It just contradicts the implication that the father is the child by virtue of being the father.
Oh, yeah, back to soldiers. I suppose that we've just concluded that hired murder is more effective than hired suicide...

Even though I am in the US Army I wont be talking alot in this thread. But I will let you know something.
Out of the whole US Army, 50% of the Army has been deployed. Now out of the 50% that has been deployed, only 20% have seen combat. Now out of that 20% of the Army only 10% has killed someone in either the defense of themself or of their battle buddies.
Note:Although the persentile is not pinpoint right, its damm near.
