What happened to being your own CO?

I remember the game used to give a small bonus for being your own CO. However after temporarily joining under another player who has ascended since then I am unable to make myself my own CO like I was before.

What has happened to that? Has it been removed in order to foster "teamwork" and "cooperation"?
