There's something called Atlantic Ocean...
If we are at it, I could have asked Australia and New Zealand, worth visiting I'm sure, but too far for now for me, I'm not really a long distances traveller.

France is 18. I know that from a school trip, although I don't believe it's enforced too strictly.

Well, you can buy alcohol in supermarkets if you don't look like a child or preteen, so you are right.

i also believe you can drink alchahol at home with the consent of parents from age 3 or something stupid

Re: Alcohol legal age in EUROPEAN countries?
In the UK it is legal to drink in a beer garden from the age of 3. However there a whole bunch of things that can stop you, such as child abuse/protection laws.
Same goes for private property that is not in view of the general public, you can legally drink from any age, but other laws prevent it from happening.
and you can drink in a restaurant or a pub/bar that serves food from the age of 14 with someone who is related to you who is over the age of 18. They must buy the drinks & you are not allowed to approach the bar.
Other than those its 18

Re: Alcohol legal age in EUROPEAN countries?
It'd also be interesting to hear from people about how stringently these rules are or aren't enforced in their country.
The United Kingdom, for example, has come down fairly hard on underage drinking the past few years. Presumably in an effort to combat the rapidly growing binge-drinking culture which we've developed. When I was 17 I remember being able to drink my local pub with no trouble whatsoever. Five years later I'm working in an Off License and we get it constantly rammed down our throats not to serve to potentially underage people. We're checked by the government every few months, and failure results in a hefty fine. Repeated failures can even result in your license to sell alcohol being removed.

Re: Alcohol legal age in EUROPEAN countries?
the age limits for buying are relatively tightly enforced (demand of ID to prove age can often be enforced up to at least 24 years... occasionally even older persons get asked...)

thats debatable
certainly where i live, if your caught drinking underage, you get it confiscated and taken home
most shops ask for id, but kids just ask an older friend to buy it
