"Great holy armies shall be gathered and trained to fight all who embrace evil. In the name of the gods, Browsers shall be changed to carry the internet out amongst the peoples and we will spread Firefox to all the unbelievers. The power of the Firefox will be felt far and wide and the wicked users of IE shall be converted to use the true browsers."

Re: The best Fantasy book series
too cursed many to set one single best series...
but a few of superior quality are:
all three series by david & Leigh Eddings (elenium/tamuli, Belgariad/Malloreon, Younger gods...)
The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind

those were good books yes... we just never finished reading them... (we only had access to poor-quality ebook versions of the last several...)

Re: The best Fantasy book series
To pick just one
WoT was very good, but especially in the later books things seemed to .. waffle. I also don't think it has the long term re-readability to be classed as 'best fantasy series ever'
Sword of Truth.. is nice for what it is. From the 5 or so I've read so far.. each seems to be pretty similar to last one. Currently wondering if I want to watch the tv show
Song of Fire & Ice, I liked very much. Great series, one of the only ones that I didn't find predictable. Same as the original Donaldson novels, thoroughly original.
Best ever though? For me would likely go to something more along the lines of LoTR.

the books get very different after the first few... (for one, he starts learning things...)
as for the TV show... its quite good... not too much adaption decay... the story is quite different at first, but by the end of the first season, it has remedied a lot of the decay created in the first few episodes...
one reason for this is, we think, that terry goodkind is closely involved in its creation...
its worth watching...
anyways, back to topic...
LotR isnt on the scale... its too much of a base building block for it all... or maybe the fulcrum of the scale all else is measured upon...
