Sleeping and memory relation

It's serious thread not spam. I noticed recently that my memory decreased lately, and apparently, my sleeping time decreased. Sleeping between 6h30 and 7h30 compared to my former 8h to 9h of last year. I did read in a newspaper article regarding sleep that sleeping below 8h30 was bad for health. Now, I have heard about people here talking about not sleeping for a day or two. I am sure that their memory got affected, and probably more than me. I'm just curious if you noticed a decrease of your memory along with lack of sleep. Or if it's just some people.

And whoever says "sleeping is for the weak", well, I'm sure any intelligent and serious scientific study regarding sleep will tell you the contrary. Also, as I said, it's not a spam thread for such useless statements (ie: sleeping is for the weak).

Re: Sleeping and memory relation

i've not the time to talk long (as, ironically, i'm off to bed now) but i must say it seems true and i've experienced it, but i suppose as when i have not slept for a while, my whole body doesn't work as well, not just my memory? so it may just be general fatigue.

also slightly disappointed, i seen the title and assumed it'd be about dreams and the such, oh well!

night all!

You raised a good point indirectly. Memory and dreams...I wonder if "ratio" of remembering dreams can be compared to regular memory. Hmmm...I sould start to focus on my dreams again now. Who knows, it might help a bit. I have never slept below 4h-4h30 in my life btw..

I have read some extensive work on this(i get bored a lot) and 8.30 hours is the lower margin, 10.30 is the upper margin.Curiously enough, more sleep does more harm then less sleep,it affects your coordination, memory and brain synapses. As for dream I know for a fact there is no dream ratio" because i have dreamt less than 10 times in my entire life; this is because where i lived was a noisy and hectic city, you rarely could have gotten a good nights sleep.

It could be:the food, the water, an issue thats on your mind, stress, and a change in schedule.

Re: Sleeping and memory relation

Yes, it's been proven lack of sleep kills a lot of brain cells, I remember reading somewhere that going 20-26 hours without sleep kills the same amount of brain cells smoking an entire marijuana joint to yourself does...

From experience with both.. unless it is done quite frequently.. you wont notice the loss of memory from either except for the duration (Of being under the influence and being awake after you've reached 20 + hours) during that time.. you act pretty **Filtered** retarded.

As for dreams, less than 8 hours of sleep and most people won't remember any of their dreams..

Also affected by dehydration and hunger..

I live in your wardrobe

I tiptoe through the corridor
I follow you anywhere
I rip your braveness apart
And never ever care

Wow, that's scary. Oh well, I rarely stay awaken for long periods (max being 23 I think) but then it was always followed by at least 6h of sleeping. :) I *never* miss a night and stay awaken more than 24h!

Re: Sleeping and memory relation

i don't know about the link with memory (i don't have to remember much these days) but if i stake awake for a long period (over 24 hrs) i end up in a weird and nasty state of being totally tired yet not being able to fell asleep.
