time for a light-hearted discussion

well are you?

why are you, and what are you superstitious about??

is it just in our heads or is there something more to it?

is there such a thing as "luck"?

is it possible to push our luck?

sometimes when we worry about something it usually comes true. so with that in mind, our thoughts, or brain waves can be measured which more or less proves our thoughts are energy, and since EVERYTHING in the universe vibrates at a certain frequency that's also proof that EVERYTHING in the universe is energy no matter how solid it is to the touch. so if everything in the universe is energy, does that mean everything is connected? can we influence what happens to us by simple will power?

i try not to be superstitious myself and i don't know much about energy, brainwaves and whatnot...these are just some thoughts that came to me so i thought i would post them and see what you guys think

I've still got to reply to unseen in the other thread but I will do a quick one here...

erm. I change tbh. Some days I push it all off a hocus pocus... but then human belief is quite possibly the strongest force we have access to. Some would argue a nuclear weapon..I would disagree because belief is what brought about such a weapon and is what would drive someone to use it.

Perhaps you should have a look into Noetic science. I know it's recently been thrust into the forefront because of Dan Brown making extensive use of it in his new book.. but a lot of scientist's and philosophers have longed resided themselves to the fact there are a lot of forces in the universe we know very little about and could well never know about. In general though if we believe something strong enough humans have demonstrated will power is sometimes enough to cause that event.. whether it be placebo (curing illness with no medicine) or nocebo (causing symptoms because belief in illness - a chap was diagnosed with liver cancer and later died. The autopsy, which was re-done and highly investigated, revealed no signs of cancer. The man's belief of his imminent death had killed him) effect to something like subconsciously orchestrating seven years bad luck because you broke a mirror and believe in the old wives tale.

On a personal basis.. like I said. I do change from day to day. Some days I will see and experience things that give me the impression of things beyond our general perceptions or empirical knowledge...I remember a while ago being in a bout of depression and sitting around thinking in depth about God (I am not generally religious at all..) I sent a cup of water flying and it came out in the shape of a man receiving a bird into his hands. The water soaked into the bed further in places where a beard and eyes would be. Jesus apparently received a dove when he was baptised. Superstitious nonsense? Maybe... I never really dwelt on it that much and just dismissed it as coincidence..but there an awful lot of coincidences.. I wonder when the day will come when the scientific world begins to truly wonder if that will continue to be good enough to cut the cloth.

In general, no. I don't buy into a lot of superstitions. The ears burning.. the shadowy presences down the corridor.. being told i'm psychic by some estranged woman on a carnival... however I am always open to suggestion on the topic. Gary Schwartz recently did some experiments on mediumship whch gave mediums who were put in conditions to prevent cold (and hot) reading of participants.. the mediums scored clear 60% higher accuracy than the control group (mediums getting between 75% and 95% accuracy, control group getting between 10 and 35% accuracy).
