Re: Stargate universe

for some reason, the ending got us thinking on the word "omnious"...

excellent episode... built more on the instabilities in technology... (the on-off jumping of the communication stones...)
hmm... what kind of technology did they use to make them anyways?
did they get it from the atlantis database or the asgard core?

we also liked the gist of what young said to that group on earth... "we'll do what we want, now stop meddling so much!"

Re: Stargate universe

the stones in SG-U are not of ancient design... they have the same shape, but not he same surface structure...

also, the wiki's do not contain verified facts... only what whomever edited that part knows/guesses...

The Tau'ri have never had ability to develop such technology on their own, so it is obviously reverse-engineered... the question is where it is reverse engineered from...

the stones have some resemblance to asgard control panel stones, but are also different... the device they are used together with, is not similar to ancient tech, but neither that close to asgard tech...
the asgard never showed themselves having such technology in tiny scale, but they had similar tech for intergalactic communication...

Well the Gateworld paints a different story.

You notice how they they refer to them as "Ancient" communication stone's, seems a give away to me. :-D

Re: Stargate universe

we think that is mainly due to that being the only other kind of inter-galactic communication they've had before...

but it could be that it is reverse-engineered ancient tech...

Re: Stargate universe

We've gone from having the Hills in space to just plain old the Hills....

A few spoiler type questions/comments:
- Why did Destiny drop out of FTL the first time?
- They can use up 40% of the ship's energy reserves with just a few fireworks?
- Why have they even got access to weapons? Surely they'd be hooked up with the main systems that they still can't access....if you're gonna put in a master code to isolate the main systems, wouldn't weapons be a priority?
- If you get drunk using the stones, which person gets the hangover?
- The best minds? Again, there are a few conspicuous absences from that category.....

I liked Rush's little sabotage of Telford's plan.....but overall the episode was pretty poor.....we needed to see way more internal politics on Destiny - who was siding with who, etc.....we needed way less of Eli/Chloe.....just another so so episode
Where'd my scifi programme go? I can't see it for all the soap bubbles floating around

hmm our theories:
1 - part of its programming... it most likely arrived in a galaxy, they just chose not to dial any of the planets there...
2 - most of the power use was most likely not shown... remember, while less than an hour passes outside the show, many hours can pass inside... the difference is that this time, instead of having all that time pass between episodes, they had a decent bit of it in the middle of an episode...
3 - defenses may be needed, and would have to be directed semi-manually... we doubt the ancients had installed complex and intelligent weapons targeting systems on the destiny... the ancients did not expect anyone to try wasting power with repeated weapons usage... its rather silly after all...
4 - good question... we'd guess the owner of the body, but it could also go to the personality possessing the body... who knows what that tech can send inter-galactically?
5 - they might eventually show up... remember, carter wasnt present very much early in sg-a (yes, they didnt have comm. tech then, but even after they got it, she wasnt there much); for that matter, daniel wasnt sent to atlantis, even when he was one of the wisest where ancient lore and understanding was concerned... and till McKay became regular (with launch of atlantis), she was by far the most brilliant scientist... for now, rush/eli are the ones knowing the most about destiny... eventually others will learn more, and will be brought into the light more... have patience...
we've got a more curious thing we've been wondering about... how would it work if one of the parties in a body switch communication were to be pregnant?

Re: Stargate universe

lol. The questions regarding who remains drunk is easy... it would remain with the body. The technology relies that there is a separate component to a humans mind - consciousness (still not actually proven/disprove in the real world). The technology switches that component around though it would be ideal to assume there will be an adjustment period of a few seconds or so for the consciousness to adapt to the conditions of the new physical form.

If you doubt me braking it down... we can use an example in the show with the colonel. He was badly hurt, but upon leaving his body and switching with telford he no longer felt the pain.

This could potentially be contradicted by Daniel and Vala in season 9 when their bodies suffer the effects of what they're experiencing in the Ori galaxy.. however.. that was a different machine and their bodies were not possessed by the other users, their consciousness was actually superimposed on the host bodies.

Why did Destiny drop out of FTL at a random check point so they could fire the weapons? I don't really know.. although picking up where Zeratul was travelling, perhaps the ancients left the weapon controls separate in case of an emergency and as a safety precaution when readying to fire the ship drops out of FTL...as up to date the only ships capable of using weapons in hyperspace were those of the later generations of replicators from the Asgard and Milkyway galaxies.

How did it drain so much power. Well we have to remember they've already been using that supply for a few days and on top of that as Zeratul pointed out the weapons may have been firing a lot longer than shown in the episode, I do believe Rush had time to figure out how to make his plot succeed before implementing it on the computer terminals. Add to that their ability to fluxuate the power being used and the fact the systems were highly inefficient due to age (so lots of power will have been lost). Although I can see where Jack's coming from... the FTL drive would surely have been a bigger power drain...

and finally... in regards to experts..well...I cannot think of any immediate excuses for McKay..we'll have to wait and see what happens in the Atlantis movie before we know what he's up to and Carter is off commanding a space ship, no doubt on galaxy spanning missions. She may have had some input but may not have been able to be present at the meeting, same with Dr Lee.

I am presuming the technologies will be similar.. and if advanced HS cannot use weapons.. then it's logical to conclude FTL certainly wont.

Re: Stargate universe

as for the power drain when FTL is taken into account... as you well know, when the ship seeks out a star, isnt when its empty, its when the power reserves reach a certain point...

the first time they experienced it, they had drained more power than it had really planned for, and it had to use a planet to redirect itself... the second time, they used less, but still enough to trigger the recharge programming...
