Why you ask? Look at the date it is coming out. December 18th is only one week before Christmas and all of the kids will be out of school then. Therefore very little word of mouth will happen, helping get more people to see it.

It will die after the first week as word of mouth spreads. :smt010

If the movie was any good it would be coming out in the summer so it could play all summer long. The movie companies have been doing this a long time and know how to maximize profits.

This may be true, but also could be because they didn't want to compete with the other heavy weight box office titles? Harry Potter? Transformers? All those other movies..

I went to see Avatar at IMAX in melbourne on sunday and in 3D, and it was a great movie in my opinion. Looked stunning, plot was very miltary vs science, but still a great experience.

Indeed. I loved it so much I watched it twice, once at theatres then came home and watched it again.

There is a rumor going around that the director signed on for two more projects as well.

Not to mention the fact of the story, it was amazing even though it just reminded me of the struggles of the Native Americans vs The New Comers.

Like that movie "New World" or my all time favorite, Pocahauntus.

The Director, James Cameron, has been quoted as saying that movies such as Dances with Wolves were heavy influences. The script's been bumping around the net since Titanic and he only did the movie now because he felt the tech was up to the task finally.

Personally, I saw it today and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Though my whole family admitted the story was essentially Fern Gulley meets Pocahantus in Space...it was still quite solid.

Cameron has said he plans two sequels as this is only the beginning of a long story arc (according to him). Something I find interesting, given that he's known to have...disdain...for sequels.

My breakdown (out of five): Overall Score = 4/5

Story - Decent enough, well written, even if it follows an older than dirt theme. So, 3 out of 5

Acting - Quite good, with very nice voice acting for the CG bits. 4 out of 5

Pretty Factor - as one critic put it, some of the CG invokes the "Uncanny Valley" effect. But, overall it is well done. I hope to see the facial motion capture method he used applied to other CG movies. It was quite effective. As for the environment, it was absolutely breathtaking at times, I highly recommend watching in 3D. Easily pulls a 5 out of 5 on pretty.

Replay Value - Is it worth watching twice? Not without an enthusiastic friend to share the experience with. However, it will be a worthy addition to my movie library. 4 out of 5.

Iron Man 2 is great and all, but you cannot switch that actor from the Air Force. [-(

I'm so going to see Prince of Persia anyway. Didn't see much other movies as appealing as this one in the genre.

Honours and Awards

Re: Most anticipated movies for late 2009-early 2010?

a lot of those high-profile movies may turn out to be mediocre, but who cares? its entertainment... sometimes you'll encounter movies that you want to see dozens of times, while others you wish to see only once... and a few rare movies are ones you wish you never saw...
