I know there are many people backing the fact it's a war game. I know there are also people saying that it's more of a roleplaying game (MMORPG).
What's your opinion?
I personally think it's a roleplay game based on stargate races-based characters wars. Race wars and the like, but *not* like in a "real" war game. As roleplay has a great part.

There's no roleplay other than what the players put in by themselves.
There is no character development.
There is no system of interaction other than means to engage in war by.
There is no system of rules to follow/create a storyline - either narrated, or self-guided.
Essentially, the game is just a gathering of numbers. You cannot even use MSes as roleplaying items, for example, due to the sheer imbalance of the single MS that defends 11 to 12 planets (inc. homeworld) per player. There are plenty of other debilitating factors to deconstruct your idea of a roleplaying game.

If I create a cube, and write "ball" on the cube. Does that make my cube a ball?

You got a point...it's not in essence a rp game. But it definitely becomes one due to players.

Actually I'd classify it as neither. I'd put it under the category Strategy. Similar to Starcraft or Command and Conquer. You see you have to build an economy to build your warships...then you have to balance the income with what you're able to defend. You steal resources from other players, but only those you feel you could successfully war against thus a strategic choice. You join alliances/empires based on certain strategies (either game strategy or social strategy). All in all it is a Strategy game...if there were just fighting and no economy then it'd be a war game...if it were juts forums then it'd be an RP.

I have to agree with Thade...
SGW is an economic strategy game. Though I have to admit it may have evolved into a game of Political strategy. Even if I don't really, honestly play, I come back to observe...This game can be just as entertaining to watch as to play.
