It would be 3 hits if they gained NO life force.
When you ascended attack someone, then their life force begins to re-fill.
So in theory, you MUST take ATLEAST 4 hits to go down. If you look at it like this:
100% -> 66%
they recover form their replenishment level
66.7% -> 33.7%
recover some more
34.4% -> 1.4%
recover more
2.1% -> 0% (de-ascended)

More or less correct, just one addition: Ascended Life Force comes to play first. So if the target has 500M reserves and 30M ALF, and you hit him 100M damage. then the reserves will be damaged by 70M only.
Ao yes, in most cases 4 hits are required for a succesful descention. What happened to costa was probably he inproved his max LF level but forgot to fill to the maximum.
