You cannot be killed in the sense of the word, you can however be nearly destroyed be sabbotaged and attacked to the point where you have no weapons or people left. But this is unliklely to happen as long as you play often!

Even if this would happen you would still have you covert levels and your upgrades etc!

Yes, when your new to the game, you'll rarely be attacked, so defense isnt worth much.
But as you become a good player and get lots of income pe turn, unless you could log in every 30minutes to bank or spend your money, then you'll need defense to protect your money. Or you could just loose it all and progress very slowly in the game... to each his own I guess...
