Thanks to capitalism, when your doctor tells you you require a kidney transplant to survive, you no longer can be certain if you actually need a kidney transplant or your doctor simply needs a new speedboat. Nice.

I loved it. I would watch it again, if I could.
An Oscar? Not certain as to what Oscar it was given.

best movie, best director, best original screenplay, best editing, best sound editing and best sound mix.
the direction was actually quite good, and i don't consider myself competent to judge sound awards. the editing was effective, although not inspiring. quite standart for a war movie, to be honest.
but best screenplay and best movie?
in my opinion the movie was just dull. bored me to hell. neither the plot nor the charecters had me captivated.
i have to be honest, i haven't seen the other movies, but it seems to me that if this is the best hollywood had to offer this year, it was a sad year indeed.

Its not really a war movie is it, well when i just watched it now becuase you mentioned it, I still enjoyed the movie myself, it brought the hard fact of what they do out there risking there lives everyday to keep others safe, it shows the physical and mental strains it puts on a person.
I will give it 9/10.

Re: the hurt locker
Excelent movie, gritty, harsh and realistic character based story. Doubt I will watch it again any time soon, it's not that kinda film, but enjoyed it, very rare to find films of this quality.

Best Movie? Not certain about that, especially with bigger heavy weights reigning in. It was most definately a 9.5/10 but it doesn't beat other movies out like Avatar for me.
Best Director? No. By far, no.
Best Original Screenplay? Not a clue what that means.
The last three? Not quiet sure why those even exist. I guess everybody needs an award these days to prove they did hard work, rather then swimming in the money they make off certain movies.
It's in my permi collection as well.

there are two screenplay awards. one for the best original screenplay, i.e. a screenplay that was written from scratch for the movie, and one for the best adapted screenplay, i.e. a screenplay that is based on another work (a book, a play, a TV-series, etc. not sure if a remake comes under this one, but i think it does).

Re: the hurt locker
I enjoyed it very much. More so because it wasn't your standard war movie. I thought Hurt Locker was more character driven and less reliant upon action. And when there was action, it wasn't slow mo / explosions.. explosions and more explosions but rather gritty realistic combat. The Sniper scene was really tense and drew me in.
As far as oscar.. it was better than the other nominees. While it may not have been as great as past winners, it still was a very good movie.
If you want oscar bs.. the blind side? sandra bullock winning an oscar for her 'performance'?.. I liked her better in Speed..

Re: the hurt locker
i actually thought about it some more today, and realised it's actually a metaphore, or rather a searies of metaphores.
my previous judgement of the movie being, well, boring and not increadibly well made still stands, but the metaphores are quite intresting.
i'll have to watch it again with this on mind to see what i can come up with, but here's what i figured out: (spoiler included)
- Wiliam James is (for the most parts) George W.
- the next to last scene (the one with the Iraqy trapped in an explosive vest) is the way americans view the current situation. they (Americans, simbolised by James), are there to save the Iraqi citizens (the guy trapped in a vest), from other citizens (that put them in the vest).
-the last scene: america just doesn't know any other way to help (the all "one thing you love" speech)
any thoughts?

For the movies I saw, it was the best. Instense from start to finish. Avatar was visually stunning. So stunning, in fact, that the fact that the storyline was trash didn't detract from the movie. Hurt Locker grabs you and never lets go. I loved it.

Because it's not science fiction, for one. And ironically, because no one says "**Filtered** me, what a bloody one sided war glorifying movie."KnowLedge wrote:why did it rape avatar as the oscars???/
