star wars is also a Space Opera.
i saw some possible connections between babylon 5, and crest of the stars.
another possible, is Xenosaga vs Mass Effect, but would require a bit more work.

macross is faster paced, but Crest of the stars has some more in depth and "realistic" technologies. you can get bored of Crest of the stars fairly quickly if you're not into the technical stuff.
i personally would recommend Macross frontier :-p but that's me.

Re: Recommendations?
you might want to consider comparing:
Spaghetti Western vs Anime Western (Trigun etc)
Matrix vs GiTS
Power Rangers vs Gundam

Re: Recommendations?
I'd definitely reccommend looking at the Matrix trilogy as a whole, versus Ghost in the Shell.
but I wouldnt stop there. The Wachowski brothers had the main cast members watch several anime movies as inspiration, so I'd expand it to:
Matrix(1, 2 and 3) versus Ghost in the Shell, Akira and Ninja Scroll.
(those anime's were released in a pack, "anime classics", and noted that those specifically were films i mentioned before..... cast.... watching..... etc.)

Re: Recommendations?
If you are into sci-fi and space opera then I'd suggest Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Good plot and old-school.
Just a though, but how can the creators of Ghost in a shell credited the Animatrix as their inspiration when GitS was first released in 1989 and animatrix in 2003?

wrong way around, The Wachowski brothers cited Ghost in the Shell as one of their inspirations for the matrix. Various studios saw the matrix and in turn were inspired to make the Animatrix short films. so indirectly, the Animatrix was inspired by Ghost in the Shell.

Re: Recommendations?
As long as the list is updated.
Perhaps like so?
Solus makes a list. People add to that list, and then Solus updates said list, and removes the posts. Or keep the posts.
Although, removing the posts would focus more attention upon the main post rather then looking through all the animes that people have same named already.
