lol sorry folks.
it was (as usual) a double problem that made the problem
problem 1) table crashes. which usually would not be an issue as there is an 'auto repair' build into the db.
problem 2) temp partition on server smaller than memory needed to repair table. thus disk full. thus crash.

HOPEFULLY its all fixed up :)
