Well, in my time in sgw I've experienced a number of different forms of alliance. I started off in the SLA, which was famed for being the 'punching bag of sgw'. However it was some of more enjoyable time I've spent in sgw, just pure Goa'uld/System Lord role play and the like. We however as afore mentioned, often targeted by others for.. well usually no reason. At one point Omega even stepped in and stopped the destruction of the SLA at the hands of Unnatural Selection. I can't say I exactly remember why, Esker was Omega at the time, though I think there were other motives in play.
After that I spent time in the Aeon Kings, a much different experience. In the AK I was surrounded by powerful players and powerful politico. Still however, the AK could not claim the dominance Omega did. Even so I made some excellent friends, though most have since departed the game.
Finally I ended up in Alpha, circa 2006, when it was still the training alliance to Omega. At the time there was only Alpha and Omega, along with the GA and later CoP. This I suppose, to me at least, was the best of both worlds in sgw. I formed great friendships and also enjoyed the status that came with being a member of Alpha. In my time I saw the Empire take shape with the addition of Pi, OSL (Defunct) and then Mayhem. Each alliance had their own flair and their members were greatly varied in personality.
Oh and I also had a stint in which I joined Reborn with RahL and Acronon. It was my first experience with seeing an alliance built from the ground up. And yes, it was very cool and satisfying to see something from nothing. I however must accredit RahL and Acronon for the building, I was merely an observer.
Overall, I'd personally have to save my time in the OE has been the best. Not so much because it was an empire but rather the people in that empire. There will always be a group of alliances who are in power and allied.. just as there will always be those who oppose those in power.

Joining an empire makes you a target. Lesson # 2 in human nature - everyone wants to kill the king of the hill. Hiders as they have been called are drains on resources and well managed alliances broom them quickly.
The hiders to me never step up and try toy make a mark on the game , and they sure as heck do not last in empires.
Show me an empire made up of hiders and I show you my best list of farms.
Nicely said. Especially the last sentence

Re: Why
In the end it comes down to this. It is about relationships, your friends and a bit of cyber glory , lol. Those are the reasons we play .
If you REALLY want to get to the nut of it the simple truth is that Empires provide a balance in the game.
Let's imagine this game with no empires ( although it would be impossible even via game code to stop them ) ....no empires and max of 30 member alliances .Sounds like heaven to some , eh?
Now...imagine that alliance has the 30 biggest money spenders with ms's ranked 1-30 ; all with all ascensions done , with 400 plus mill armies and all covert 37. Happy now ?
Point is there will ALWAYS be something we can debate in this game we are all addicted to, but my advice is to not take it so seriously and enjoy doing your best with the people you like and then never let them down ...ever.

Re: Why
Empires don't seem to change much I think, just adds an extra element.
Normally you have a few different levels of fighting:
Individual
Alliance
Ascended
Planets
Officers/Co's
By being in or fighting an empire, you just risk having the Empire attacked due to a single members actions or show a risk to a person based on if they attack your alliance, there are more people waiting on the sidelines to be called in. This threat of retaliation by multiple groups is what Empires use. By being a larger group you get benefits and negatives, if one person doesn't step up or goes inactive for a while, there are others to take their place, etc.
There are definite negatives to empires though, if they get large enough they normally require an opponent to them, developing a stalemate or perhaps a deterrent against actions. It also seems to make the game more boring when so many of the active players are allied with Faction A or Faction B, while Faction C wish to develop peacefully while they battle it out.

Radical Minority..best alliance ever
Regarding the topic: its a great feeling when a 4 people alliance can put up a long fight against opponents many times bigger
its easier to play SGW being part of a huge empire, protected by many naps and large numbers...but following orders....
...or be free and exposed to all those who are hiding in big alliances and desperately trying to demonstrate they Mighty Powers to small groups, knowing that if something backfires, there is an empire to back him up...
its a mater of choice....

Re: Why
as said before its gonna be part of the game no matter how hard opposition is, if however the flaws that exsist in the game, like unlimited ATs, the ability to transfer and trade resources, and the inability to win a war then they would have a much harder exsistance then they do now, but they would still exsist. as for 'hiding' behind tags, i think it happens and will continue to happen, there are a large majority of players who dont hit alliances inside an empire cause its a overwhelming odds for them, that members will tell their new friends and others will see alliance attack log and retaliate, ect. and before you know it you have multiple people from various alliances targeting one person or an alliance composed of few numbers. That players joining knows these powers have hit policies and will come to their aid, now is that really 'hiding'? or is that going where you feel part of a family?
As for the comment of people within those empires use the alliance/empire as a crutch when they reply "if you continue to attack me you will be sat on by my alliance/empire." Who joins an alliance/empire with the impression they are not going to back you up? cause quite frankly if Im part of an alliance/empire that doesnt have my back then im not in an alliance/empire to begin with.
Whatever your PoV is, your only question to ask is "do i enjoy this game?"

Re: Why
My view on the matter is.
Empires are great, but they can strive out of the way fairly quick, and fall apart or cause ruckus server wide.
Single alliances can try to have their training alliances ( trying to avoid the empire status at some point ) but its hard to do it this way and in the end you will turn into some kind of an empire.
Than there is Just an Alliance like ours... we keep it small in numbers, ppl around are well known and there isn't much new recruits. Also work to be done in an alliance is so much less compared to work to be done in an empire.
And we can have absolutistic leadership
because ppl trust the leader and won't go against his word most of the time ( consider a father/mother and kids relationship
)
There are benefits in big empires and small alliances, i think its harder for an empire to get all the benefits of a small alliance, than vice versa.

Yes your alliance Easy would be a great example of what Im talking about, you have been a pillar of hope for many new alliance wanting to do well in SGW, and I do thank you for your role in trying to create something new.
I just hope there will be more alliances like FS.

Exactly, and where do the small independent alliances fit in?
