Open Carry

Does it make the streets more dangerous, safer or have no effect? Discuss. :smt047

Re: Open Carry

Interesting. My initial reaction would be 'more dangerous'.

However, it might be the deterrent of the weapon is enough to keep the peace. That is, as long as no one uses it.

But a regular bar fight becomes a hell of a lot more lethal.. drunken people become a hell of a lot more dangerous.. people with anger issues become a hell of a lot more dangerous.. police will be shooting a LOT more people, simply because there is *always* a threat to their life as long as a suspect has a gun.. and the **Filtered** Muslims at the edge of my neighbourhood would be "needing killin'".
Call me crazy, but I'd rather push the button than walk around with a bomb in my arms.

And from that self-reflection follows that I expect all people to use a gun if they have one and get into a fight. And feeling more confident, because you have a gun, makes it a hell of a lot easier to get into a fight.

At first, nothing will change. Then, tensions will increase. The first idiot (people like me in such things) will fire a shot, and the whole neighbourhood will go up in flames.

There. Open Carry for policemen and -women, absolutely. Open Carry for anyone else? Hell no.

In most states, you are not permitted to carry a firearm into a business where the primary source of income is alcohol. This, however, is not the case in Vermont, where there are no state level gun laws with exception to preemption which prevents local municipalities from regulating anything other than firearm discharge. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, Vermont has the third lowest crime rate in the nation.

Juliette wrote:drunken people become a hell of a lot more dangerous.

This is a perfectly understandable concern. But once again, it is illegal to drink and carry in most(all?) states. In fact, the argument could be made that open carry is actually better in this regard as it would allow the police to spot drunks that are carrying, whereas with concealed carry drunks would be able to carry unabated do to cops not knowing that they are armed.

Juliette wrote:people with anger issues become a hell of a lot more dangerous.

This too is an understandable concern, but it wont change whether the person is openly carrying or conceal carrying. Furthermore, if you are openly carrying and you are making a big fuss, odds are you will be arrested and there is a chance that weapons charges can be tact on.

Juliette wrote:police will be shooting a LOT more people, simply because there is *always* a threat to their life as long as a suspect has a gun.

This is an interesting hypothesis, one I can understand. However, I am not aware of any evidence to support it.

Interesting theory, but I am going to have to disagree on the grounds that most states already allow open carry in some form.

Re: Open Carry

in today's mad world, i'd say dangerous. many people nowadays (especially the youth) lack the decency, common sense and brains to be responsible with a firearm.

@Dr. Nasty: In other words, you are saying my concerns are realistic, but already taken care of by law? Is that a correct summary? :) Then yes, I am in favour of open carry.. but only for people with a gun permit. I don't want some crazy immigrant to go to the department store, buy a gun, and walk the streets. :)

However, in the Netherlands, we are in a state of open war with various 'rebellious elements' in the Muslim community, and in fact, as a consequence with the Muslim community as a whole. (To illustrate: Recently a test trial was held at a to-be-founded sharia court, completely against Dutch law. Girls are raped. Elderly are beaten, public transportation attacked. All by a specific group of Muslims, a certain generation, and all with the blessing and the guidance of the Lord Imams. And our politicians sit down with them, and drink tea in their mosques?! The population no longer accepts political cowardice in these matters.)
Back to open carry. If our Muslim population would be allowed to carry guns, we would be dead in a matter of days. There would be nothing left but tea-drinking cowards without political backbone. We shall not tolerate that.

I see the arguments for open carry, and I am in favour.. but not in the Netherlands. The people that have come here in the past decades are screwed up. Completely off their rocker.

@KMA: Perhaps it would be a good thing.. they'd shoot themselves and we'd be rid of a lost generation?

It's not limited to Netherlands, it's also case in France, Great Britain, and other countries around the world who aren't muslim countries.
Their extremists and their legions happen to be active, and they obviously would benefit first from open carry.

Little is done against them due to ideals of multiculturalism, double standard tolerance, bad feelings regarding hypothetical past "atrocities" made by europeans to them, and many other ridiculous reasons.
Law in Europe is meant to be same for everyone, no matter what religion/culture they have.

Ah well, people like me are limited to vote for politicians who talk tough but in the end due to assimilated-to-radical-islamists-part-of-population-a.k.a.-politically-correct-left-wing don't do much. Infact, I don't have anyone else to vote for. Sarkozy and the likes..only option. Voting far right? I'm disagreeing completly with them on more than half of their program!

Don't think open carry would be good in France, same as Netherlands, hoodlum dipsh|t would be too happy to have more of those. We don't want to have 17th street gang/Blood/Crips like bunch in our countries.

Open carry is where your pistol is visible, as opposed to concealed carry, which is just that, concealing the handgun you are carrying.

Here is the Open Carry website for more information about it.

I'm from one of the orange, Open Carry friendly states. Honestly, we don't have a lot of people who take advantage of the law. Just because it is allowed by law doesn't mean that everyone takes advantage of what I consider to be a privilege. Our crime rate is still relatively the same as it normally would be if we didn't have the Open Carry law.

Re: Open Carry

its not the law Per-Se that determines if it is affective...

take 2 US states, state 1 has a law allowing open carry, and state 2 does not, if nobody takes advantage of the fact they can carry a fire arm openly in state 1, then what's the difference going to be between the 2 states? i would hazard very little.
where as if muggers/rapists etc etc etc, know there's a good chance the next person they attack could well be carrying a gun will defo make them think twice, why risk your life when there are other states/cities which don't allow open carry making for easier pickings...unless they couldn't careless for life :?
